Services for Macon Hughes, 91, of Ada are 10:00 a.m. Saturday at the Criswell Funeral Home Chapel, Rev. Jerry Wells will officiate. Burial will follow at Byrd’s Prairie Cemetery near Tupelo. The Chickasaw Honor Guard will conduct military honors at the cemetery.
Mr. Hughes passed away Tuesday, February 2, 2016 at an Ada hospital. He was born November 26, 1924 in Tupelo, OK to Charlie S. and Rena A. Grist Hughes. He attended 8 Old Owl Elementary School in Centrahoma and graduated from Centrahoma High School. He received a Bachelor of Arts degree and a Master’s degree in Psychology from East Central University in 1977.
He married Gertraude M. Pohl November 26, 1955 in Berlin, Germany. He later married Lorene Clark. She preceded him in death. Mr. Hughes was the Pontotoc County Alcohol Program Director in the 1980’s and a 32nd degree Mason. He retired as a Sergeant, First Class from the U. S. Army after 27 years of service. Mr. Hughes served in the Pacific during World War II. He later served in Germany, Vietnam and Korea.
Survivors include two sons, Daniel R. Hughes and Patrick W. Hughes and their families; a daughter, Rena G. Hughes; a step-son, Mark Clark and family; step-daughter, Debbie Vogt and family; five granddaughters, Angela Walker, Annie Hughes, Arielle Hughes, Hayley King and Allison Hughes; a grandson, Aaron Hughes; five great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandson; and a brother, Dennis Hughes and his wife Estalee of Wagoner and his family.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a sister who died in infancy; two brothers, Asa Hughes and Floyd Hughes; and a granddaughter, Abbie Hughes.
Bearers will be step-grandchildren, Jared Vogt, Weston Harris, Jacob Vogt, Paul Harris, Will Vogt and Travis Harjo. Honorary bearer will be Caroline Harris.
