Janet Earle Emery, 81, of Norman passed away at home Sunday, May 4, 2014 as a result of a long battle with Parkinson’s.

She was born to Fletcher and Edna (Freeze) Benson of Greenville, Texas on February 27, 1933, and was the middle of five children. Janet graduated from Greenville High School and thereafter earned a Certificate of Nursing from Baylor School of Nursing.

Janet married her beloved husband, Harold Emery May 16, 1953 at her parent’s home in Greenville. She was a devoted wife and a loving mother to their three children, Bruce, Mark, and Leslie. Janet was active in church and a member of The Garden Club, International Friends, The Republican Club, and Altria.  She supported Harold wherever he was transferred and active with Harold in real estate rentals.

Over the years, Janet attended Friends University, Wichita, KS, Oklahoma University, Norman, OK, and the School of Mines, Golden, CO. While at OU, she studied Journalism and developed a love for writing historical fiction. “Vienna” and “Top Gallant” were amongst her favorite books written.

Janet was a lovely lady and will be dearly missed. She will be remembered for her outgoing personality, her compassionate heart, and the love she held towards her husband.

Janet was preceded in death by her parents, Fletcher and Edna Benson; her oldest brother and sister-in-law, Joe and Jean Benson; and son, Bruce Emery.

She is survived by her three siblings, Martha Sue (Suzi) and husband Sam Powers, Lydia Lou (Lou) and husband Clyde (Bud) Dodson, and Fletcher Lee (Lee) and wife Jeri Benson; her husband of 60 years, Harold Emery; daughter-in-law, Sharon Emery; son, Mark Emery and wife Vicki; and daughter, Leslie Salazar.  She will also be missed by seven grandchildren, Beverly, Michael, Ryan, Adam, Evan (all Emery’s), and Erik and Diana Salazar and (Brandon Talkington); two great grandchildren, Taylor and Cannon Talkington; and other family members.

The family will be present to receive friends from 3 p.m. – 5 p.m., Wednesday, May 7, 2014.  Visitation times for Janet will be 3 p.m. – 8 p.m. Wednesday, 9 a.m. – 8 p.m. Thursday, and 9 a.m. – 11 a.m. Friday.  Funeral services will begin at 2 p.m., Friday, May 9, 2014 at the Havenbrook Funeral Home Chapel with Jim Stewart officiating, 3401 Havenbrook Street in Norman with interment following at the Warren Cemetery in Norman.

Arrangements for Janet and her family were placed in the care of the Vice family at the Havenbrook Funeral Home of Norman.
