Shirley Mae Elms,
78, of Norman, ascended into heaven with a ray of sunshine upon her face on
Friday, June 5, 2015. She was born in Washington, Oklahoma, the 2nd oldest of
eight children to parents, Ervon and Mae (Finley) Moody. Growing up, Shirley’s
passion was playing high school basketball where she achieved the position of
captain of her team.
Following her graduation from Washington High School, she married her husband,
Don R. Elms, together they raised three children of their own. After her
retirement from the University of Oklahoma, she thoroughly loved spending time
with family and friends. She was very instrumental in organizing social
gatherings for her singles group from church, including hosting many OU football
watch parties in her home. Shirley deeply cherished her family and friends, and
was always ready to help anyone who needed any assistance she could offer,
whether family, friend, neighbor or casual acquaintance. Her contagious smile
will be missed by all who knew and loved her. Shirley was a member of and
faithfully attended McFarlin Memorial United Methodist Church.
Her survivors include two children, Terry Elms and wife Donette of Norman and
Tina Day and husband Bruce of Nichols Hills; one step-daughter, Autumn (Elms)
Frazier; three grandchildren, Laurie Todd and her husband Zachary of Edmond,
Todd Elms of Norman, and Taylor Day of Chicago, and one great grandchild, Brooks
Todd of Edmond. She is also survived by a brother, Gerald Moody and wife
Armelda of Washington and sister, Betty Biby and husband Butch of Purcell, as
well as numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and extended family members.
In addition to her parents and husband, Shirley was preceded in death by her
son, Darryl, and her siblings, Monroe, Gerry and Merrl Moody, Carol (Moody)
Claxton, and an infant brother, Eugene.
