Dalton Earl Petty was born in Norman, Oklahoma on September 12th 1927 to Professor Edward C. and Dovie B. Petty. He attended McKinley Grade School, Norman Junior High School, Norman High School, and was an Eagle Scout. Dalton also attended the University of Oklahoma, the Taylor Instrument School in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and Southwestern State University in Weatherford, Oklahoma, where he graduated with a degree in Horology.

In 1944, Dalton joined the US Navy for World War II. After the war ended, he returned to OU on the GI Bill. He was a student in both the business school and the airport administration school, and earned a single-engine pilot license at OU’s new flight school. One of his fellow university students was June Mason. They met at church, and fell in love forever (his own words). While they were dating, Dalton continued his education, graduating from Southwestern State University instrument school in OK and from Taylor instrument school in PA. While in Pennsylvania he worked for Hudson Engineering Corp, as well as Sacony Vacuum Corp, which later became Mobile Oil. Dalton and June were married on June 24th, 1949.
Not long after their marriage he was called back to the US Navy for the Korean War, where he served in New Orleans. While living in New Orleans, their first daughter Penny was born. After his service in the Navy he moved back to Norman, and worked at the Tinker Air Force Base as an aircraft instrument technician, as well as for his father-in-law’s lumber business. In 1955 their second daughter Judy was born, and in the same year Dalton purchased the Newblood and Runyan Hardware Store and renamed it Petty Hardware, which he operated on Main Street for ten years. In 1963 they had their third daughter Suzy. Then, in 1964, he opened the Sports Center of Norman next to Norman High School. Ten years later in 1975 he joined brother-in-law Johnnie Mason in working as a Farmers insurance agent. In 1999 he began his official retirement, but he then began working part-time for the Monty Moore insurance agency, from which he never retired.
Dalton was a lifelong member of the Church of Christ. As a young man he was a member of the Old Central Church of Christ. Later he became a deacon at University Church of Christ, and he served as both deacon and elder at the Westside Church of Christ. He was a charter member of Westside for 55 years, and served as an elder for 50.

Dalton is survived by his wife of 63 years, June Petty; their three daughters and husbands, Penny and Bill Sledge of Moore, Judy and Gary Roden of Norman, and Suzy and Paul Boyett of California; their seven granddaughters, Stacia and Julie Sledge, Julia, Rebecca, and Kimberly Roden, and Christina and Elizabeth Boyett; and his sister, Ann Brazile of Washington.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Professor Edward C. and Dovie B. Petty; his brother, Ed, and wife Melba of Maryland; and his brother-in-law, Floyd Brazile of Washington.
