Moyer died Tuesday, Oct. 22, after a brief, but courageous month long
battle with leukemia and pneumonia and complications from an infection.
He was born in Duncan, Okla., on Dec. 18, 1956, to Bill and Madelyn
Moyer.
After moving to Norman, Karl met the woman he would share his life with,
Terri (Swim) Moyer and they were married for 33 years. They were high
school sweethearts and were married on June 7, 1980. They grew up in the
same church, Immanuel Baptist of Norman, and lived on the same block.
To this union, two daughters, Kari and Staci, were born and they were
lights in their dad’s life. Karl was known around this area as an
outstanding youth softball and basketball coach and his daughters shared
his love for the game. His passion for coaching led him to work with
youth teams for a number of years. He was a skilled teacher and, if you
played a team coached by Karl Moyer, you knew you would be facing a team
that was well prepared. He coached hundreds of kids in Norman and Moore
over the years and the memories about Karl as a coach have to include
his instructions and his voice when the players worked on fundamentals.
A love for sports and the competitions they offered were among the
things the family shared. Everyone knew whose car it was when they saw
the personalized auto tag, “IH82LUZ.” Additionally, with Terri’s
employment in the OU Athletics Department, the family was able to make
several bowl trips that often became the family vacation. As travel was
another activity the family enjoyed together, Karl and Terri celebrated
their 25th wedding anniversary with a dream trip to Hawaii. The family
shared a cruise last summer, a trip that became one of the best family
vacations ever.
He was known for his meticulous lawn and a great day for him was spent
working in the yard. Additionally, he loved playing softball, snow
skiing, disc golf, riding his motorcycle and playing with his two
Alaskan Malamutes, Kanook and Kya. Family was always at the top of his
list and he truly enjoyed the times his extended family had together.
Moyer worked for General Motors at the Oklahoma City plant, then retired
after 26 years of service. He was employed as an apprentice electrician
at the University of Oklahoma Facilities Management department at the
time of his death.
Surviving Karl and celebrating his life are his wife, Terri; daughters,
Kari and Staci; his father Bill Moyer; in-laws Curtis and Darlene Swim;
his sister Vicky and husband Mike Reynolds of Moore; his sisters-in-law
Debbie and Todd Wilkinson, Lori and Terry Kelleher, and Sandy and Steve
Kline of Norman; many wonderful nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Madelyn Moyer, and nephew, Shawn
Reynolds.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations for medical and
funeral expenses be sent to the Karl Moyer Memorial Fund at the Tinker
Credit Union. Cards and notes may be sent to the family in care of
Havenbrook Funeral Home, 3401 Havenbrook St., Norman, OK, 73072.
