Mike Gentry was born at A.C.H. Hospital in Shawnee, Oklahoma to Wynona and Cecil Onis (Bill) Gentry on February 3, 1941.  Mike passed away Wednesday, February 9, 2011 at Norman Healthplex.

He attended school in Shawnee, graduating in 1959.  He then attended the University of Oklahoma, receiving degrees in Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Business Administration in 1963 and 1966.  Mike grew up as a baseball enthusiast and OU football fanatic.  He worked as an accountant for Kerr McGee for many years and then for several smaller companies.  Later in life Mike pursued passions in reading, gardening, writing, traveling, and mentoring.  While tutoring at McKinley Elementary School he wrote short stories for Mrs. Thomas's third grade class each year.  He enjoyed traveling to many Lewis and Clark historical sites.  Recently a Lewis and Clark journal asked him to take part in a documentary in Omaha, NE, but he was not able to participate.  However, he did submit numerous pictures and descriptions for the project.  Mike also volunteered at the Sam Noble Museum of Natural History Discovery Room.  He enjoyed caring for and teaching the children at the Museum and prized their inquisitiveness.  After moving to Norman in 1974, he taught Sunday school classes for single adults and three year olds at First Baptist Church and Northeast Baptist Church.

He married Meredith McLean in Kirkwood, MO September 15, 1973.  He has one son, Ronald Cecil and wife Bethany of Broken Arrow, and a “future” grandchild that he just learned about at Christmas.

Mike is also survived by a sister-in-law and brother-in-law Marilyn and Jim Hopkins of Seattle, Washington, nephews and wives Randall and Amy Hopkins and children McLean, Annabelle, and Zachary, and Jordan and Crystal Hopkins all of Federal Way, Washington.

Visitation will begin at 3:00 P.M., Monday, February 14, 2011 at Havenbrook Funeral Home with the family receiving family and friends from 6:00 P.M. - 8:00 P.M.

Memorial services will be held 2:00 P.M., Tuesday, February 15, 2011 at the Northeast Baptist Church, 905 E. Rock Creek Rd., Norman under the direction of Havenbrook Funeral Home.
