Reverend Dexter Blevins, 91, died Sunday, August 2.  Services are 2 p.m. Thursday at Bethel Baptist Church with Reverend James Ehrlich officiating.

Burial will be at Sunset Memorial Park Cemetery in Norman. Arrangements are under the direction of Havenbrook Funeral Home.

Dexter was born October 13, 1919 in Nubbin Hill, AR, a 15-pound baby, born to a 96-pound mother to Stuart and Maude Blevins. He was one of 7 children raised in a cabin home without electricity or running water, but with an abundance of love.

He earned a GED in 1947; a BA from Ouachita Baptist in 1951; a Masters from Southwestern Baptist Seminary School in 1954; an Honorary Doctorate of Divinity in 2003 from Mid-America Christian University--but insisted on not being referred to as Dr. Blevins.

Dexter served in WW II until 1945 and retired Major after 20 years in Army and National Guard.  During this time he began his ministry where he served an astounding 60 years. He was the pastor in Canton, TX, Prescott, Hope, Malvern and Hot Springs AR. He moved the family to Norman, OK in 1963 where he was the pastor at Trinity Baptist for 17 years.  He continued preaching revivals and on an interim basis at various smaller churches until he was 85.

He lost wife Claudine on November 29, 2005 after an incredible bond of Christian love of almost 60 years.  Claudine often told us boys, “Your dad is the greatest man in the world.” Priorities simple: God, family and service to others. His family, adored, respected and was proud of him beyond words. He was humble, never spoke ill of people, and had legions of loyal friends and literally no enemies.  The mention of his name brought smiles to so many. He loved sports, was a prankster, and married over 6,000 people and buried thousands.

Rev. Blevins is survived by sons Paul and wife Tina, Bill and wife Marsha, Dean and wife Sarah and baby sister Annie Maude Steede; and grandchildren Britney and husband David Warden, Brandon Blevins, Carson Blevins, Chris and Ross Gilbert, Erin and husband Teddy Lehman, Wes Davis and wife Brandi.

Online condolences may be shared at www.havenbrookfuneralhome.com

Memorials may be made to Bethel Baptist Building Fund, 1717 W. LindseySt., Norman, OK 73069.
