Michael Edward Sala, 67, of Hobart, OK, passed away on September
9, 2016, from complications related to Parkinson’s Disease and a
rare facial cancer. He was a resident of the Hobart Nursing and
Rehabilitation Center at the time of his death.
He was predeceased by his parents, Kenneth Emerson and Petra
Zobeida Sala and his sister, Margaret Rosa Sala Winstead.
He is survived by four children: Heather Sala Thompson of
Oklahoma City; Ryan Sala and his wife Hoan of Richardson, TX;
Rebecca Sala Magee and her husband Kevin of Corinth, TX; and
Sean Sala of Lewisville, TX, and two granddaughters, Mackenzie
Thompson and Emma Sala. He is also survived by his brother,
Kenneth Emerson Sala Jr. and wife Susan of Washington, DC. and
an aunt, Mary Elkins of San Antonio, TX.
Michael was born in Oklahoma City at Saint Anthony Hospital on
May 1, 1949. He lived in Oklahoma for most of his earlier life,
but the family also lived in the Panama Canal Zone, El Paso, TX,
and Midland, TX before settling in south Oklahoma City in 1954.
He attended Mount Saint Mary High School for two years and
graduated from U. S. Grant High School in 1967. Later he
attended the University of Oklahoma and Central State
University.
Michael played high school baseball and was an accomplished
guitarist, performing professionally in Oklahoma City and
Norman. He was a talented singer and actor performing in high
school plays, as well as community theatre in Oklahoma City and
Elk City. At OU he was a member of the OU Men’s Glee Club. He
loved music, food, going to church and singing at worship, and
people. He was gregarious and had an engaging personality.
He had a professional career in the 1970s as public relations
director for the then newly opened Crossroads Mall in south
Oklahoma City and later worked in public relations, promotions
and program development for USA Radio Network. He also worked as
an independent consultant to individuals and companies on
promotion materials for new products along with stints at KTOK
Radio and the Hertz Corporation. During his working years he
lived in Edmond, OK, Flower Mound, TX and Colorado Springs,
CO.
A memorial service will be held at 11:00 am September 26, 2016,
at the Havenbrook
Funeral Home, 3401 Havenbrook Street, Norman,
OK, followed by burial at the Saint Joseph Catholic Cemetery in
Norman.
Memorial gifts for the family may be made to the American
Diabetes Association.
