Lydia Helen Peppers was born Sept. 12, 1914, in Colorado Springs, CO, to Ross and Helen Johnson and made her transition at Integris Bass Baptist Medical Center on Wednesday, Feb. 11, 2009.

At age 5, they moved to the family homestead southwest of Waukomis , OK. She attended a country school, then Waukomis schools and graduated from Phillips University.

She taught school one year, then went to work at the telephone company and worked the old stand-up switchboard at Waukomis .

In 1945, she married James Peppers, and they moved to Oklahoma City, where she worked for Southwestern Bell as a switchboard operator until retiring in 1979. James Peppers passed on in 1967.

She lived in Oklahoma City until this last year, when she came to stay in Waukomis with nephew, Terry Baker and wife, Dayna, who lovingly cared for her.
She had no children of her own, but was considered the "other mother" for all her nieces, nephews, neighbors and friends. She remembered everyone she loved with greeting cards for every occasion and never forgot anyone.

She was preceded in death by husband, James, sister, Margaret Baker, baby brother, Don, and great-niece, Melody Dunn.

She is survived by nieces and nephews, Dixie Baker, Ken Baker, Judy Coen of Enid, Terry Baker and Dayna Baker of Waukomis .

Services will be conducted by Dan Bunn at 2 p.m. Monday, Feb. 16, 2009, at the Methodist Church in Waukomis .


A celebration of life will be held at noon Tuesday, Feb. 17, 2009, at the Unity Church at 5603 NW 41st in Oklahoma City, conducted by Rev. Patrick McAndrew.


It will be followed by a graveside service at 2 p.m. Tuesday in Resthaven Cemetery , SW 104th and Western, Oklahoma City. Arrangements are under the direction of Ladusau-Evans Funeral Home, Enid.
