Capt Bennie Zellner was one of 3 Oklahoma City firefighters who lost their lives doing what they love. Capt. Zellner was a 17 year veteran of the cities fire department. A call in to the department came in with reports of a home on fire on the cities southwest side. Capt Zellner along with 2 others were overcome by "flashover" with heat that reached 1000 degrees. The men were searching for occupants that might be in the home.

Capt. Zellner is survived by his wife, Sandy, Oklahoma City; son, Kevin Zellner, Oklahoma City; stepsons, Patrick Perry, Oklahoma City, Travis Hurst, U.S. Navy, Troy Hurst, U.S. Navy; stepdaughter, Patricia Perry, Oklahoma City; brother, Coleman Zellner, Newcastle; and sister, LaGale Spencer, Carrolton, Texas
