Jim, as he was known to family and friends, was born to Arvil and Zelva Stine McLane. He graduated from Ft. Cobb High School in 1948. In 1951 he moved to Chickasha, Oklahoma where he farmed until 1963 when he and his wife, Ellen Sue, moved to Topeka.

He was employed by Southwest State Bank later named Capital City Bank, retiring in 1996. Jim enjoyed woodworking, creating many pieces in his workshop.He was a member of the Central Church of Christ and enjoyed many trips to Tallgrass Christian Camp.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Arvil and Zelva, and sisters Margaret and Madelyn.

He is survived by nieces Pat and husband Mike Ramsey of McLoud, OK, and Nancy and husband Doug Knight of Oklahoma City, OK as well as several great nieces and nephews
