Funeral services
for Mr. James Darrell Sprague, age 79, a longtime Norman resident will begin at
10:00 am Saturday, July 28, 2012 in The Chapel of the Havenbrook Funeral Home,
3401 Havenbrook Street in Norman with Pastor James Ehrlich officiating.
The Sprague family will receive friends from 7:00 pm to 9:00 pm, Friday, July
27, 2012 at the Havenbrook Funeral Home.
J.D. was born July 8, 1933 in Panhandle, Texas the son of Irvan and Delia
(Hodges) Sprague. He passed away Sunday evening, July 22, 2012 in Flower Mound,
Texas.
J.D. attended public schools in Forgan, Oklahoma, graduating from Forgan High
School in 1951.
He was united in marriage to Miss JoAnna Ives in 1955 in Burkburnett, Texas. He
later enrolled at the University of Oklahoma, earning a Bachelor of Science in
1956.
J.D. enlisted into the United States Army on May 26, 1957 in Fort Sill,
Oklahoma. He served in the armed forces for 20 years, earning three overseas
service bars in Vietnam. J.D. also received the Meritorious Service Medal, the
Vietnam Service Medal and was the recipient of two Bronze Stars. He was
honorably discharged on February 28, 1977 as a Lieutenant Colonel. J.D.
returned to the University of Oklahoma, graduating with a Masters Degree in
1970.
J.D. was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars of Norman, the American
Legions Post 88 of Norman and was a longtime member of the Bethel Baptist Church
of Norman.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and his wife, JoAnna Sprague on July 8,
2008.
Survivors include three sons; James Darrell Sprague, Jr. of Canyon, Texas; Jake
John Sprague, and Kevin Lutzke of Highland Village, Texas; James Darrell
Sprague, III and his wife, Kristin of Guymon, Oklahoma; two daughters; Kathy Ann
Sprague of San Pedro, California; Kristi Dawn West and her husband, John of
Norman; two sisters; Joan McNeely and her husband, Maurice of Houston, Texas;
and Jackie King of Tulsa; three grandchildren; Sean West, Amber West, and
Brandon Sprague; and five great grandchildren.
Burial will conclude in the I.O.O.F
Cemetery in Norman with full military honors.
Arrangements for James Darrell Sprague and his family were placed in the care of
the Vice family at the Havenbrook Funeral Home of Norman.
