Hazel Irene Nance,
97, died October 18, after a brief illness. Mrs. Nance was born March 12, 1915,
to Letha and Fred McMichael near Carnegie, OK and was the second of five girls.
Hazel met Troy B. Nance and they married November 12, 1932 in a double wedding
ceremony with her sister, Gladys. The Nances enjoyed 67 years of marriage
together until Troy’s death in 2001. They were parents to three sons, Eldon,
Troy Lee and Lynden.
In their early years, the Nances farmed and owned a grocery store in Carnegie.
Later, they moved to Garden City, Kansas, where they owned and operated a help
yourself laundry. As a dedicated wife, mother, and business owner, Mrs. Nance
knew the meaning of hard work, sacrifice, and a strong faith which she
demonstrated her entire life. In 1952, Troy and Hazel moved to Fairbanks,
Alaska, where she worked many years for the Bureau of Land Management. Memories
and times in Alaska shaped a large part of the Nances’ life together.
Beginning their retirement in 1974, the Nances returned to Oklahoma and made
their home in Norman. They were grateful for many years of good health and
enjoyed group travel tours during those years. They served together as drivers
for Norman’s Meals on Wheels and were active at St. Stephens United Methodist
Church. Through World’s Children, the Nances sponsored 3 foster children in
India. Mrs. Nance was active in the Norman Christian Women’s Club and St.
Stephen’s Building Committee and Top of the Hill group. Her qualities of
leadership and a strong work ethic were demonstrated in all she did.
One of Hazel’s greatest joys was investing in the lives of her children,
grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She also enjoyed gardening, canning,
sewing, reading and collecting bells from many countries.
In addition to her delicious homemade rolls, wonderful holiday meals and special
talent of writing poems at family gatherings, Mrs. Nance will be remembered for
her strong faith in God. Her Christian example and legacy will live on in the
hearts of her family and friends.
She is preceded in death by her parents, her husband Troy B. Nance, and her son
Lynden B. Nance.
Survivors include her son Eldon E. Nance and wife Maria of
Norman; son Troy Lee Nance, of Fairbanks, Alaska; daughter-in-law Madeline Nance
of Fairbanks, Alaska; sister Freda Evans of Canton, Texas; 10 grandchildren, 22
great-grandchildren and 3 great-great-grandchildren.
Special thanks are extended to the loving nurses and staff at Noble Health Care
and Good Shepherd Hospice for their exceptional care of Mrs. Nance.
Services will be held 2 p.m. Tuesday, October 23, at St. Stephens United Methodist Church in Norman with Reverend Amy Venable officiating. Burial will be in the Norman IOOF Cemetery. Arrangements for Hazel and her family were placed in the care of the Vice family at Havenbrook Funeral Home.
Visitation will be held from 6-8
pm Monday. Memorial contributions can be made to St. Stephens United Methodist
Church, 1801 W. Brooks, Norman, Oklahoma.
