Dr. Gerald William McCullough departed this life on September 6, 2016. 

He was born May 2, 1929, to Gerald Waldo and Opal Mason McCullough, in Bartlesville, Oklahoma, where he graduated from high school.  He attended the University of Oklahoma, where he was a member of Sigma Chi and earned an M.D. in 1954.  During his residency in general and vascular surgery, he participated in the first ten open heart surgeries in Oklahoma.  He served as an Air Force officer as Chief of Surgery at Myrtle Beach Air Force Base in South Carolina.  He established his surgery practice in Norman, Oklahoma, in 1962, where he practiced for over 51 years treating four generations of patients.  He served as an associate clinical professor of surgery at the OU Health Science Center, helped establish an ambulance service in Norman in the late 1960’s, was twice elected Chief of Staff at the Norman Hospital, served ten years on the Oklahoma Health System Agency passing on applications for hospital expansions, and was president of the Oklahoma Surgical Association and the Oklahoma Chapter of the American College of Surgeons.  He served as the Oklahoma representative on the Board of Governors of the American College of Surgeons. 

Dr. McCullough loved music and was an accomplished pianist for decades for his Sunday School class at McFarlin Methodist Church.  An avid supporter of OU sports, he also served as Chairman of the OU Dad’s Association and he was a long time member of the Norman Rotary Club.  Dr. McCullough was honored by the Oklahoma Medical Association as Doctor of the Year in 2009.

Dr. McCullough married Marilyn Mack on December 27, 1952, who survives him, along with their children (and spouses) Deborah Luthey (Dean), Dr. Michael McCullough (A.J.), Tanya McCullough, Ann McCullough and Kristi McCullough, grandchildren Dr. Sarah L. Shepherd (Scott), Dr. Katherine L. Shepherd (Greg), Mackenzie McCullough, Mason McCullough, Monroe McCullough, Madison ten Kate, and Jake ten Kate, and great-grandchildren Elizabeth Shepherd, Charles Shepherd and Caroline Shepherd.  He is also survived by sisters, Teresa Swagerty (James) and Sally Dennison (Gene), and brothers George Sneed (Sandy), David Sneed (Jo Ellen). 

Dr. McCullough’s sisters Barbara Reinhard, Linda Simpkins, and Jan Combs, brother Kenneth McCullough, along with his parents predeceased him.

Friends are contributing to McFarlin Methodist Church Foundation or the OU Foundation for the OU College of Medicine Department of Surgery.

Visitation will be Monday, September 12, 2016 at Havenbrook Funeral Home from 1:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m.  Funeral service will be Tuesday, September 13, 2016 at 11:00 a.m. at McFarlin Methodist Church.
