Ruth Harris Kelso, 86, of Norman , passed away on Sunday, October 18, 2015. She was born in Asher, Oklahoma in 1928, one of three children of the late Orval "Bud" and Ruby Harris. When she was 12, her family moved to Norman, where she grew up on the family farm learning the values of hard work and respect for others as well as a passion for the outdoors and animals of all kinds.
Later, she graduated from the University of Oklahoma with a degree in
Business. After college, she met and married the love of her life, Donald Kelso
and they lived in Venezuela for 6 years. Ruth embraced this adventure with all
the excitement and gusto her "farm girl" upbringing had given her. After 6 years
they returned to the United States with a family already started and continued
to raise their five children here in Norman. One of the great joys of her life
was taking her children to her father's cabin in Colorado. The pride,
tranquility and peace of this place continues to this day.
Ruth began a successful career in real estate, working in the early
years with Homesteaders and later with Don Cies Real Estate. Everyone there who
knew her will recall her trademark care and compassion for others and the way
she would take hold of your hand while talking with you. She made everyone feel
special and loved. Ruth was also a woman of faith and a devoted member of the
Alameda Church of Christ, who have been so supportive during this time.
Surviving Ruth are her five children: son, Keith Kelso and wife Kathy,
son Eddy Kelso and wife Cari, daughter Karen Orr and husband Bobby, son, John
Kelso and wife Christie, son Scott Alan Kelso and wife Kim; grandchildren,
Jackie Kelso, Christopher Kelso, Scott Douglas Kelso, Diana Kelso, Aimee Kelso,
Stephen Kelso, Chad Kelso, Benjamin Kelso and wife Ally, Shayna Orr, Alex Orr,
and Jacob Kelso: and great-grandchildren, River and Lily Kelso.
In addition to
her parents, Ruth was preceded in death by her husband, Donald Kelso, brother,
Buddy O. Harris, and sister, Thelma L. Davis.
Funeral service will be 2 p.m. Friday, October 23 at Havenbrook Funeral Home
with burial to follow at the Norman I.O.O.F. Cemetery.
