Dorothy Iverson passed away Thursday, June 30, 2011 in Norman, OK.
She was born Dorothy Ella Timmer on November 4, 1920. Raised by her maternal grandmother, she lived in a
small Norwegian town, Spring Grove, MN. which helped shape her strong ethic ties
of people that were immigrants from Norway. Dorothy attended both public and
parochial schools finishing in 1939. She went to work in Minneapolis, MN. for
two years before going to Luther College, Decorah, IA. She earned a two year
teaching degree from Luther College and met the love of her life, Lloyd
Iverson. They were married in 1942. A son David was born just before Lloyd
went overseas to serve in World War II. Returning to civilian life, the family
moved to back to Luther College and then to St. Olaf College, Minneapolis, MN.
While at St Olaf a daughter, Cheryl, was born.
In 1949, the family moved to Norman, OK. Dorothy began teaching at Sooner City
Nursery while Lloyd did graduate work at the University of Oklahoma. Sooner
City Nursery was a day care center for children of veterans returning to the
University of Oklahoma. She continued teaching at Sooner City until 1961 when
she started a private kindergarten at Trinity Lutheran Church. While teaching
at Trinity Lutheran, she earned her degree in elementary education from the
University of Oklahoma in 1964. After teaching at Trinity for five years,
Dorothy went to Cleveland Elementary School where she taught for eighteen
years. She retired in 1984 after working with young children for thirty-four
years.
While being a devoted wife and parent, she was very active in social activities
that centered around her church and the University of Oklahoma. She was one of
the founding members of University Lutheran Church and active in several
organizations within the church. Dorothy served on the board for the OU Opera
Guild, OU Drama Guild and the OU International Host Family Program sponsoring
many Scandinavian students. She was president of the Norman Scandinavian Club
and helped promote the annual Christmas smorgasbord. For many years, Dorothy
delivered "meals on wheels".
Dorothy's Norwegian heritage was extremely important to her. She enjoyed "Rosmaling"
which is Norwegian folk art painting. Many of her pieces were displayed at the
Jacobson House in Norman. She and Lloyd made numerous trips to Norway tracing
their heritage and visiting relatives.
Dorothy always felt the move from Minnesota to Oklahoma was the best thing that
happened to her family. She began her life in a small Norwegian community and
finished in a vibrant university community. She felt blessed with a wonderful
family and many friends and was fortunate to have had so many varied experiences
that made her life rich and fulfilling.
Dorothy was preceded in death by her husband Lloyd, a daughter Cheryl, a son
Mark, and a brother Morris.
Survivors include: a son David and wife Darlene of
Coppell, TX., son-in-law Howard Conyers and wife Susan of Reno, NV. Also five
