John Leonard Humphrey, 81, of Norman passed away peacefully with family surrounding him on Tuesday, April 15, 2014 in Norman.

Lovable patriarch of the Humphrey-Jernigan clan, John's life was an American story and Oklahoma journey.   He lived lovingly and modestly serving his family, community and country as father, coach, teacher, athletic director and "PaPa John".   Born in Bristow, Oklahoma in 1932 he went on to graduate high school in Weleekta, marry his "pretty girl" Anna Lee Jernigan from Checotah in 1954 and graduate East Central University in 1955 as a football standout.   He then received his Master Degree in Education at Southwestern State University in 1969 and then a Master Degree in Administration at the University of Oklahoma in 1975.   His journey continued as coach, teacher and service for 40 years from baseball to football in Duncan, Oklahoma.  He went on to be honored locally, statewide and nationally as an outstanding coach, athletic director and role model who exemplified the highest standards, positive influence on his students and meaningful contributor to his schools and community.

John was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers and a sister.

He leaves behind his loving wife and constant companion of 60 years, Anna Lee; his four daughters, Kim Caldwell and husband Dan, Stephanie Humphrey, Lisa Humphrey, and Jennifer Karol and husband Tom; his six grandchildren, Jared Russell, Collin Russell, Katie Payne, Whit Payne, Ashley Cogar and husband Bryan, and Michael Caldwell; his great grandchild, Grant Cogar; and his nephew, David Reynolds.

The Humphrey family would like to extend their deepest gratitude and appreciation for all of the kind words, prayer and support.  The Humphrey family would also be honored for you to join them as they celebrate John’s  wonderful life at 2:00 p.m., Friday, April 18, 2014 at the First Presbyterian Church, 555 S. University in Norman.

Arrangements for John and his family were placed in the care of the Vice family at the Havenbrook Funeral Home of Norman.
