Funeral services for Mrs. Zelma Hagar, age 96, a lifelong resident of Norman, will begin at 2:00 pm Tuesday, September 11, 2012 in The Chapel of the Havenbrook Funeral Home, 3401 Havenbrook Street in Norman with Reverend Cal Brannon officiating.

Zelma was born June 5, 1916 in Coalgate, Oklahoma the daughter of Noah and Mollie (Turner)Tallent.  She passed away early Friday morning, September 7, 2012 at the Norman Regional Hospital following a brief illness.

Zelma attended school in Stonewall, Oklahoma, graduating from Stonewall High School in 1934.  She later attended East Central University in Ada, Oklahoma from 1934 to 1936.

She was united in marriage to Mr. L.T. “Lightning” Hagar on December 17, 1936 in Ada, Oklahoma.  Lightning and Zelma remained in Ada until 1942, when they moved to Norman.

From 1953 to 1965, Zelma worked at The Campus Fabric Shop on Campus Corner and enjoyed every day there.

Zelma was a seamstress for more than 70 years, winning numerous awards for her sewing talents.  Her focus was quilting, often creating masterpieces for family members to be pass down to endless generations.

In 1968, Zelma was awarded “The Golden Thimble Award” by the Daily Oklahoman.  This award is presented annually, chosen from a statewide list of individuals that are the very best.

Zelma was also a gifted gardener, entering and winning first prize at the Cleveland County Fair for growing the best yard-long green beans and tomatoes.  Of course, no gardener is complete without the talent of being a great cook.  Zelma's recipes are some of the finest around, especially when it comes to Fried Chicken and Zelma's Red Velvet Cake.

Zelma also had a dedication to her family that was simply awesome.  She loved and adored her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren.  She created special moments that etched memories that will last a lifetime.  Simple, good old-fashion values, tempered with a golden heart and loving hands where always at work to provide the very best for those she loved.

Zelma was a member of the New Hope Extension Homemakers Group of Norman and was a longtime member of the McFarlin Memorial United Methodist Church.

Survivors include her daughter, Nancy Buck and her husband, Wayne of Clinton, Oklahoma; four grandchildren; Kimala Buck of Blanchard, Oklahoma, Caren Denney and her husband, John of Clinton, Oklahoma, Melinda Fagan, and her husband, John of Georgetown, Texas, and Curtis Hagar and his wife, Terrie of Harlingen, Texas; six great grandchildren; Carley Hagar, Mahaley Fagan, Brady Denney, Dalton Denney, Mitchel Fagan, and Lander Fagan.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, and one son, Roger Hagar.

Burial will conclude in the I.O.O.F Cemetery in Norman.

Arrangements for Zelma and her family were placed in the care of the Vice family at the Havenbrook Funeral Home of Norman.
