Funeral
services for Dr. Phil Haddock, age 99, a longtime Norman physician will
begin at 10:30 am Saturday, October 22, 2011 at the First Christian
Church, 220 South Webster in Norman with Reverend David Spain and Dr. G.
Hugh Wilson officiating.
Dr. Phil, as he was known in Norman for more than 60 years, was born May
26, 1912 in Louisville, Kentucky the son of James Laurel and Sara (Snellings)
Haddock. He passed away early Sunday evening, October 16, 2011 at his
Norman residence after a brief illness.
Dr. Phil moved to Norman with his family when he was just 10 years old.
He was educated in the Norman Public Schools, graduating from Norman
High School in 1930. He obtained his undergrad from the University of
Oklahoma in 1934. He graduated from the University of Tennessee College
of Medicine in 1937 and did postgraduate work in gynecology and
obstetrics at St. Louis County Hospital and the Mississippi State
Hospital.
After graduating from Medical School, Dr. Phil entered the Civilian
Conservation Corps in New Mexico as a first lieutenant. He met and
married Emmette Jones, a pharmacist on April 19, 1938 in Silver City,
New Mexico. After serving six months in the Civilian Conservation
Corps, Dr. Phil resigned and he completed his internship and
residency.
Dr. Phil and Emmette made their life in Norman, where Dr. Phil, along
with his brother, Dr. Jim Haddock, began a medical practice together in
a two story house in 1940 at Gray Street and Crawford Avenue. In 1941,
Dr. Phil decided to volunteer for the Army Air Corps. He was inducted
in April, 1941, prior to the U.S. Entry into the war. Dr. Phil was
later assigned to the Army Medical Corps. He served in the 58th Medical
Battalion attached to the 45th Infantry Division and saw action in North
Africa, Italy, France, and Germany. Orders for Japan were rescinded
when atomic bombs were dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki. Then, Major
Haddock was discharged from the Army in March of 1945.
Dr. Phil returned to Norman and resumed into his medical practice.
Norman was a bustling little town after the war due to everybody's
return home. Norman was without a hospital due to the closing of the
American Legion Hospital and Dr. Phil was delivering babies and seeing
patients at home and in Oklahoma City hospitals.
In 1945, Norman received a government grant to build the municipal
hospital. It was a half a story underground, because it had to be built
onto the former American Legion Hospital. Dr. Phil, along with his
brother, Dr. Jim Haddock and Dr. O.M. Woodson performed the first major
surgical operation in June of 1946 at the new hospital.
Later in 1951, the two story home that served as the Haddock Clinic
since 1940 was moved off and replaced by a new building at 231 East
Gray. Dr. Phil continued practicing medicine at this location for the
next 55 years before closing his practice in 2006.
Despite his commitment to medicine, Dr. Phil was active in the Norman
Chamber of Commerce and has been a member of the First Christian Church
since he first came to Norman in 1922, when church services were held in
an old hotel at the corner of Main and Webster before the present
structure was built. He was also a longtime member of the Norman
Kiwanis Club.
When Dr. Phil wasn't practicing medicine, he enjoyed golf, hunting and
fishing. Most recently, he was selected as Norman's 89er Day Parade
Grand Marshal.
