Christene Floyd Cole went to be with her Lord and Saviour, Jesus Christ, on October 15, 2011.
Christene was born on January 22, 1912, near Johnson Corners, in McClain County, Oklahoma, to Delta L. and Lucy Elma Hodges Floyd. She loved growing up on a farm and enjoyed her early education in a one-room school house in Washington, Oklahoma. She later attended Norman High School. During her high school years, she met her future husband, A. R. Cole, whom she married on November 25th, 1931. Christene and her husband immediately set out on the road in their newly established photography business, traveling through many states, taking both portrait and group pictures. They later established a series of businesses in Norman, including Cole Studios on Main Street, University Studio on the Campus Corner, L & A Café, Kiddiegraph, and a studio at the U. S. Navy Base. As a photographer, Christene Cole chronicled the lives of generations of Norman residents. She took public school class pictures, Norman High School yearbook photos, individual and family portraits, class and family reunions, and weddings. In addition, Cole Studios took annual photographs for Oklahoma Boys State, Oklahoma Girls State, both the OU and OSU Yearbooks, and the 45th Division National Guard. Cole Studios became the official OU football team photographer, best known for the center picture in the program. The Cole Photography business spread to other states, most notably, Tennessee. Christene opened and operated a studio at the Navy Base near Memphis. During this time, she continued to grow Cole Studios, always in partnership with her sons, Dolan and Lyndol Cole, also professional photographers Throughout her life she made numerous life-long friends, many of whom worked for her and all of whom remember her with fondness and admiration. She was a life-long member of the Dorcas Sunday School class at First Baptist Church, and in later years attended Bethel Baptist Church, where she was the oldest member. The family wishes to express their appreciation to Dr. Paul Plusquellec, and to the caring staffs at both Brookhaven Extended Care, and Heartland Hospice.
She was preceded in death by her husband, A. R. Cole, son Lyndol Cole, granddaughter, Lisa Anderson, and daughter-in-law, Nelda Cole, as well as sister, Iola Tarbet and brother, Jack Floyd.
She is survived by her loving children, son, Dolan Cole, and daughters, Sandra Cole Brown, and Janell Cole McDonald and husband, Oscar, and daughter-in-law, Maxine Cole. Her beloved grandchildren who survive her are Greg and Jho Lyn Cole, Debi and Rick Bradley, Danna Cole, David and Gina Cole, Todd and Monica Lucas, Greg and Holly Rogers, Diana and Jon Schoech, Steve and Lynn Rogers and Christy Brown and husband, Charles Van Sickle. In addition, she leaves behind many great-grandchildren and great-great- grandchildren.
Memorials may be made to the local charity of your choice. Visitation will be held 9:00 a.m. – 8:00 p.m., Tuesday, October 18, 2011 at the Havenbrook Funeral Home, 3401 Havenbrook St. of Norman.
Funeral services will be held 2:00 p.m., Wednesday, October 19, 2011 at Bethel Baptist Church, 1717 W. Lindsay St., Norman with interment following in the I.O.O.F. Cemetery of Norman. Arrangements for Christene and her family were placed in the care of the Vice Family at Havenbrook Funeral Home.
