Bernice “Granny” Barker, age 98 of Wanette, OK, passed away Thursday, January 4, 2018.
Bernice Parks was born June 27, 1919 in Tupelo, Oklahoma, to Edmond and Lillie (Hallmark) Parks. She learned how to work as a young girl, as her family followed work as farm laborers. Bernice married Emery R. Barker Sr., and they settled in the Lexington/Slaughterville area. Together they raised two children, son, Emery Jr. and daughter, Emma Louise (Lou. Granny never forgot her humble beginnings, and she continued farming and gardening well into her twilight years. She kept a garden, and grew watermelon, and they sold watermelons for many years at their stand north of Lexington. In fact, Bernice mowed her own yard well into her 80’s. When not working, she enjoyed quilting, and she never missed a good game of dominos. She had a heart of gold, and welcoming smile, and was known to many as simply, Granny. She was a wonderful mother and grandmother, and will be dearly missed!
She was preceded in death by: Her husband, Emery R. Barker Sr.; Daughter, Emma Louise Blevins; Son, Emery R. Barker Jr.; Grandson, Kenneth Barker; Her parents, Ed and Lillie Parks and her siblings.
Granny is survived by: 7 grandchildren, Rick Blevins and wife Tina of Calvert City, KY, Tom Blevins and wife Amy of Benton, KY, John Blevins of Reno, Nevada, Teresa Morris of Cunningham, KY, Mary Barker and Kurt Olson of Clearwater, FL, James Barker and wife Jamie of Noble and Carla Carter and husband Daniel of Wanette; 14 great grandchildren, Jake, Brian, Natalie, Andy, Cody, Lillie, Christina, David, Stacie, Nick, Trent, Joey, Chelcie and Mae; 20 great great grandchildren, and a host of other family and friends.
Services will be 2:00 P.M., Tuesday, January 9, 2018 at Wilson-Little Funeral Home Chapel, Purcell, OK. Burial will follow at Noble I.O.O.F Cemetery.
