Sandra Mae
Johnson Winters, one of many women who began founding their own
Company's during the 1980's passed away Sunday, September 9, 2012.
Sandra Mae Johnson Winters was born on September 2, 1943 in Norman,
Oklahoma to Earl and Lillian (Brown) Johnson. She lived in Norman until
she graduated from Norman High School and the University of Oklahoma.
After living a short time and teaching in San Francisco, California,
Sandra returned to Oklahoma after an automobile accident took the lives
of her mother and grandparents. Sandra returned to Oklahoma and
obtained her Masters degree from Oklahoma State University. It was in
Stillwater, Oklahoma that she met and married her husband Roger Max
Winters in 1970.
Sandra and her husband Max then founded the Pitchfork Youth Camp in
Weleetka, Oklahoma.
Sandra described her first younger years of life as “The Happiest, Most
Wonderful, Loving, Adventures any person could ask for”. Many hours
were spent on the farm of her grandparent's Jess and Ruth Brown, playing
on Dave Blue Creek which ran through their farm. Fishing and camping
trips were spent with her father and mother on Lake Texhoma and many
vacations were taken with her parents and relatives to such places as
Yosemite National Park and Niagara Falls.
She tells of the wonderful trip to Europe with Judy and Jayne Harkey and
Bill Engles.
Before indoor plumbing, and after dark, taking a warm water pan bath
with her grandmother on the back porch where the old water pump was, and
at the end of the bath, pumping cold water, pouring it over her head by
her grandmother, Ruth Brown was to Sandra a sweet memory. Her
Grandmother Ruth was the female in her family who Sandra felt had the
most influence on her.
Sandra remembered getting baby sparrows from the nests on the front
porch of her grandparent's house and seeing if she could feed them until
they could fly away. When her grandfather was mowing the hay, it seemed
there was always a baby rabbit, in it's nest in a hole in the ground
that would get one of it's legs cut off and she would rescue it and
raise it until the rabbit could make it in the wild alone. Sandra was
always a loving and giving person.
Sandra loved and adored her father, Earl Johnson. She was proud of his
capabilities and awards in hunting and fishing, but most of all she
loved his poetry. She felt fortunate because her dad had left her
vision and wisdom. Was he a perfect man, far from it? But, empathy,
sympathy, wisdom and a love of nature, to her were far more precious.
Sandra was always a “can do” person. She would usually find a way to do
what some would consider impossible. Sandra was a lover of life, other
people's life stories, world travel, reading, nature and was an
entrepreneur with an infectious laugh and smile. One friend described
her as being very earnest in every thing she did.
Growing up, and being an only child, Sandra's friends were always
important to her. We feel it was reciprocated by the honors she
received in high school, such as Yearbook Queen and later in life, the
honors bestowed upon her and the Company she founded, Big Cabin
Wholesale Inc., in Springfield, Missour. Sandra's employees also loved
and respected her.
Sandra would tell the story of her precious mother giving her piano
lessons, dance lessons, gymnastics. Sandra was not good at any of
them. What she was good at was Founding and running a successful
Company and her entrepreneur abilities in Springfield, Missouri. She
wished her mother had lived to see this success.
Sandra's Bank in Springfield, Missouri nominated her for Small Business
of the Year;
which she won. When the question was ask; what are your greatest awards
and rewards in life, Sandra's answer was her two sons, Cody and Lee!
Sandra was asked to be part of the Springfield Chamber of Commerce
Angels Program to help other's starting a new business, Sandra said with
the Angel's program, on top of her business Big Cabin Wholesale, Inc.
the most important of these were her family, sons, Cody and Lee and her
husband, Max. There was really no time or anything more important to
Sandra than her beloved family.
Sandra was preceded in death by her parents and grandparents and one
sister.
She is survived by her husband and family, Max Winters; two
sons, Roger Lee and Cody Max and his wife Jennifer and their son Jack;
half sister, Julie Orr. Also surviving is her beloved Aunt Nona
Sterling and Uncle Harold Brown; many cousins, nieces, nephews, aunts,
uncles, beloved, but too numerous to name.

Visitation will be held 1:00 p.m. - 8:00 p.m., Sunday, September 16,
2012 at Havenbrook Funeral Home, 3401 Havenbrook St., Norman, OK 73072.
Funeral services will be held 2:00 p.m., Monday, September 17, 2012 in
the Chapel of the Havenbrook Funeral Home with
interment following in the Fairview-Maguire Cemetery, east of Noble,
Oklahoma. Arrangements for Sandra and her family have been placed in
the care of the Vice Family at the Havenbrook Funeral Home of Norman.
