Ray Doyle Murrah, age 77 of Lexington, passed away Sunday, December 4, 2016.
Ray was born February 3, 1939 in Oklahoma City, OK, the 3rd of 4 children born to George and Goldie Pearl (Sears) Murrah. He spent his early childhood in Moore, before moving to Lexington where he finished school, graduating with the Class of 1958. Ray was drafted into the United States Army, and served his country proudly! From the time he could walk, Ray was enthused with horses! By age 12, he was a professional jockey, earning money to help support his family. As the years went by, he began riding and roping in the rodeo. Ray began as calf roper and later moved into team roping. On May 15, 1958 in Purcell, OK, Ray married the love of his life and his best friend, Bernice Brown. Together they raised their only daughter, Tammy. Ray was a ‘True Cowboy’, and his love of horses and ranch life was shared by his family. For many years, he trained and cared for horses, Bernice and Tammy by his side. He worked for OEC for more than 31 years, retiring as Staking Chief in 2000. Ray was a family man; a devoted husband and father, brother, uncle and a true friend. For many years, he and Bernice attended the Rose Hill Pentecostal Church of God east of Lexington.
