Wylie Cicero Merritt Jr., 79, of Norman, passed away May 25, 2015.

Wylie was born October 29, 1935 in Maysville, Oklahoma to Wylie Cicero and Earma Ruth (Farris) Merritt and attended school in Maysville and later Pauls Valley before matriculating to the University of Oklahoma where he earned a BBA in Accounting.  He sat for his Certified Public Accounting certificate in 1966 and taught as a graduate student at OU and the University of Florida in Gainesville while earning his Master’s degree and working towards his doctorate.

He married his wife Evelyn Ruth (Braun) Merritt in Tampa, Florida where they lived until returning home to Norman, Oklahoma where he could follow his beloved Oklahoma Sooner football team.  He established a private accounting practice and spent many years serving small businesses in and around Muskogee, Oklahoma before joining the Oklahoma Tax Commission as Director of Internal Audit.

Wylie served the Tax Commission for 18 years in Internal Audit and later as Director of Management Information Services.  His time there was remembered fondly by many when he retired in July of 2004.

Besides being a life-long Oklahoma football fan, Wylie enjoyed fishing, yardwork, small home projects and helping his sons with automobile maintenance and repair.  He was always ready to help anyone who needed any assistance he could offer, whether a co-worker, neighbor or casual acquaintance, and he leaves many friends who will remember him for his ready smile and encouraging words.

Wylie was preceded in death by his parents.

He is survived by his wife Evelyn, sons Wylie C. Merritt III and wife Judy, Andrew D. Merritt and wife Traci and grandchildren Adam, Preston, Melinda, Amanda and Amelia Merritt.

Services to celebrate his life will be 2:00p.m., Thursday, May 28, 2015 at Havenbrook Funeral Home Chapel. Interment will follow at Lexington Cemetery
