Wylie Cicero Merritt Jr., 79, of Norman, passed away May 25, 2015.Wylie was
born October 29, 1935 in Maysville, Oklahoma to Wylie Cicero and Earma
Ruth (Farris) Merritt and attended school in Maysville and later Pauls
Valley before matriculating to the University of Oklahoma where he
earned a BBA in Accounting. He sat for his Certified Public Accounting
certificate in 1966 and taught as a graduate student at OU and the
University of Florida in Gainesville while earning his Master’s degree
and working towards his doctorate.
He married his wife Evelyn Ruth (Braun) Merritt in Tampa, Florida where
they lived until returning home to Norman, Oklahoma where he could
follow his beloved Oklahoma Sooner football team. He established a
private accounting practice and spent many years serving small
businesses in and around Muskogee, Oklahoma before joining the Oklahoma
Tax Commission as Director of Internal Audit.
Wylie served the Tax Commission for 18 years in Internal Audit and later
as Director of Management Information Services. His time there was
remembered fondly by many when he retired in July of 2004.
Besides being a life-long Oklahoma football fan, Wylie enjoyed fishing,
yardwork, small home projects and helping his sons with automobile
maintenance and repair. He was always ready to help anyone who needed
any assistance he could offer, whether a co-worker, neighbor or casual
acquaintance, and he leaves many friends who will remember him for his
ready smile and encouraging words.
Wylie was preceded in death by his parents.
He is survived by his wife Evelyn, sons Wylie C. Merritt III and wife
Judy, Andrew D. Merritt and wife Traci and grandchildren Adam, Preston,
Melinda, Amanda and Amelia Merritt.
Services to celebrate his life will be 2:00p.m., Thursday, May 28, 2015
at Havenbrook Funeral Home Chapel.
Interment will follow at
Lexington Cemetery
