(permission granted)
John Hughes, age 91 of Lexington, passed away Wednesday, December 5, 2018, three years to the date of his sweetheart Dayle.
John Henry Hughes was born March 1, 1927 in Seminole County, OK, the baby of four children born to Greear and Ivor (Ward) Hughes. John was raised in the Dora Community and attended school there. As a young man, he learned the value of hard work, while living in a farming community. John moved to Shawnee to complete machinist training and then lived in Okla. City where he worked in the packing plant. He eventually moved to California. John answered the call of service and joined the United States Navy, and served his country proudly during both, World War II and Korea. He was a true patriot, and this reflected throughout his life. John married his best friend and life partner, Dayle Hughes, and they made their home in Lexington. John worked at the Power Plant for the University of Oklahoma and retired after more than 21 years of dedicated service. He and Dayle were members of the Good Sam’s RV Club, and John served as both President and the OK State Wagon Master. John also was a faithful member of both the Veterans of Foreign Wars and the American Foreign Legion. He and Dayle enjoyed their later years traveling and spending their winters in South Texas. John loved playing bingo. He called bingo in the Valley when he and Dayle would visit. In fact, he looked forward to bingo, and played his last game a week before he passed. John never had any kids of his own, but he treated his nieces and nephews, great & great-great nieces and nephews as if they were his own. He looked forward to visits, and would always have a tootsie pop waiting for them. He will be deeply missed!
