Bob was born to
Elmer Ray and Ethel Green Champeau October 13, 1930. He was preceded in death by
his parents and his sisters Verdena Masters and Geraldine Lester.
Bob married Anita Starks January 13, 1951 and they were blessed with four
children: Beverly Ann (Mrs. Bob Coggins), Larry Don (Debbie), Denise Gay (Mrs.
Dean Richardville), and Mark Alan.
Grandchildren (Sara Coggins, Comfort Coggins Price, Jeff Champeau, Nathan
Champeau, Kattie Champeau, Brooke Champeau, Christen Brummett, Michelle Reeves,
Kevin Hoffman) and two great grandchildren (Chloe Sullivan and Nivienne Price).
Bob grew up on a farm five miles east of Norman and learned how to work hard and
to translate for his deaf parents. He attended Enterprise Country School until
the eighth grade, when he and his parents moved into Norman, where he graduated
from Norman High in 1948.
He worked after school and summers to help support his parents at Green Leaf
Grocers, Gilt Edge Dairy, Sooner Theater and Campus Bowling Alley. After
graduation he served one year in the army. Then he delivered laundry for Nuway
Laundry when he met his future wife Anita Starks.
Marriage and wanderlust sent them west to San Bernardino, California, where Bob
was employed by the United States Postal Service. The couple had the first two
of their four children there (Beverly Ann and Larry Don).
Bob then wanted to get his college degree, and OU was the only place he would
consider. So back to Norman, and a transfer to the Norman Post Office and three
years of college full time and three years of full time post office work. While
there, he received the Employee of the Year Award. And along came two more
children (Denise Gay and Mark Alan).
With degree in hand, Bob became the Production Manager of Nuway Laundry Company.
But his competitive spirit nagged him into a real estate license in 1970, at
which time he opened his own business, and honestly and spiritedly helped
hundreds of families buy or sell their homes.
He closed his business in 1980, and went to work for his good friend Harold Cox
at American First Abstract Company, where he was also awarded Employee of Year.
He worked there until his health forced him to retire.
Bob was always admired for his honesty, integrity, and leadership qualities by
friends, co-workers, and most of all his wife, children and grandchildren. He
was a member of the Little Flock Primitive Baptist Church.
An immediate-family grave site service will be at
Independence Cemetery. Friends
and extended family are invited to a Celebration of Life Open House from 4 to 7
pm, Thursday June 25 at his home at 803 W. Brooks. Guests are invited to bring
photos and memories of their favorite moments with Bob.
