C. Joe Holland, 91, died Wednesday, Jan. 10, at home in Norman. No
services are planned at this time. Arrangements are under the direction
of Havenbrook Funeral Home of Norman.
Mr. Holland graduated from Blackwell High School and attended Northern
Oklahoma Junior College in Tonkawa before coming to the University of
Oklahoma where he earned a B.S. Degree and Master's Degree in
journalism. He received a Ph.D. in history from the University of
Minnesota.
He married Mary Marie Battle in Norman, Oklahoma, in December 1947.
During World War 2, he served in the U.S. Army Air Corps.
Mr. Holland returned to the University of Oklahoma where he was a
professor of journalism for more than 40 years. He was Director of the
School of Journalism during the 1960's. He was a member of Phi Beta
Kappa, Sigma Delta Chi (the Society of Professional Journalists), and
Kappa Tau Alpha ( the National Honor Society in Journalism and Mass
Communications). He was selected to the Oklahoma Journalism Hall of Fame
in 1982.
He was preceded in death by his parents and brothers Dick Dempsey
Holland, Loyal Wells Holland, and Infant Holland.
Joe is survived by his wife of 59 years, Marie B. Holland, one daughter
and her husband, one sister-in-law, and numerous nieces and nephews.

Brooks, Norman, OK 73079.
