Funeral services for Trula Woodruff will be held on Sunday, December 4, 2011, at 2:00 p.m. at the Prater-Lampton-Mills & Coffey Funeral Chapel with Rev. Bobby Tollison officiating, and burial in the Mt. Olivet Cemetery in Hugo, OK. Trula passed away Thursday, December 1, 2011, in Paris, TX at the age of 80.
Trula Irene Woodruff was born September 4, 1931, in Farris, OK, the daughter of G.H. “Pony” and Frances “Fannie” Geneva (Waugh) Birchfield. Trula grew up in Hugo, OK, graduating from Hugo High School in 1950. She was working as a telephone operator downtown with S.W. Bell when she won the Miss Oklahoma Pageant in 1952. That same year she also won 4th Runner-Up in the Miss Universe Pageant in Long Beach, California. While in CA, she was an actress in a chorus line for the movie made about the Miss Universe Pageant, “World’s Most Beautiful Girls.” Trula even did some casting calls and screen shots with actor Dale Robertson. She married Dr. Bill E. Woodruff in Hugo, OK, on Dec. 4th, 1953, and they spent 20 years together raising four daughters. Trula went back to work in 1974 at the local glove factory, and then enjoyed 10 years at the Choctaw Memorial Hospital where she was known for her good cooking and fresh pies. She also worked at the Little Dixie Head Start before she retired in 2001. Trula never slowed down though, and was still driving, paying bills, and getting her hair done until November 3 of this year. Her determined and independent spirit lives on in her daughters and family whom she dearly loved.
Trula was preceded in death by her parents; Dr. Bill Woodruff in 1996; nine brothers and sisters, Juanita Winship, John Buster Birchfield, Harney Zuma Birchfield, LoEdith Birchfield Miller, Randell Frances Birchfield Jackson, Rozella Geneva Birchfield Mitchell, Willie Lafayette (Bill) Birchfield, Iva DruNell Birchfield Lentz, Troy Furman Birchfield.
Trula is survived by four daughters, Karan McCoin and husband Jason of Hugo, OK, Sharon Curran and husband Roy of Little Elm, TX, Daphne Spanhanks and husband Joe of Walters, OK, and Jana Kays and husband David of Bogata, TX; six grandchildren, Chris Burchfield, Jeff Burchfield, Kayla Boaz, Erin Boaz, Kevin Spanhanks, and Jessica Spanhanks; four great-grandchildren, Kyler, Greyden, Colby, and Bentley Burchfield; one brother Walter Birchfield of Heath, TX; numerous nieces, nephews, and extended family.
Family will receive friends on Saturday, December 3, 2011, from 5:00-7:00 pm at the Prater-Lampton-Mills & Coffey Funeral Chapel. Family and friends are also invited to sign the guest book or send private condolences to the family at www.praterlampton.com.
