Funeral services for Vernon Taber will be held on Saturday, March 24, 2012, at 10:00 a.m. at the Wesley United Methodist Church with Rev. Phil Hodson, Rev. Oscar Wilkie, and Rev. Keithen Brown officiating. Graveside services following the same afternoon at 2:00 p.m. in the Quinton Cemetery in Quinton, OK. Vernon passed away Monday, March 19, 2012, in Hugo, Oklahoma, at the age of 84.
Vernon Foster Taber was born January 18, 1928, in Quinton, OK, the son of Isaac Newton and Dollie Catherine (Fryar) Taber. He married his first wife, Bertha Lou Taber on January 17, 1947, in Mena, Arkansas. Vernon had worked for a power company in Modesto, CA for 21 years and for PSO-AEP in Hugo, OK for 17 years. He moved to Oklahoma in 1970 and lived in Hugo for the past 42 years. He was a member of the United Methodist Church for 40 years. He joined Wesley Methodist Church when moving to Hugo where he served as a Trustee, on the PPR committee, and as property chairman. He left high school and joined the United States Navy and served during WWII.
He married Winona Butcher on March 22, 2003, in Hugo, OK. He enjoyed fishing, and helping others when there was a need of any kind, especially electrical. He was very aware of things and a keeper of details. Vernon enjoyed life to the fullest.
He was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife, Bertha Taber; one daughter, Connie Filkins; brother, Capprine Taber.
Vernon is survived by his wife, Winona Butcher-Taber of the home; their children, Edmond Foster Taber of Hugo, OK and Mike Short of Modesto, CA; Carol Bastleman of Hugo, OK, Ruth Ann Barrera of Tollhouse, CA and Mary Watson of Hugo, OK; Marlin R. Butcher of Lindsey, OK; Donna M. Wilberger of Leggett, CA and W. Darlene Cavender of Harrisburg, OR; 20 grandchildren 38 great-grandchildren.
The family will receive friends Friday, March 23, 2012, from 6:00 p.m.- 7:00 p.m. in the Prater-Lampton-Mills & Coffey Chapel in Hugo, OK.
