Funeral Services for Merl G. Powers will be held on Thursday, February 27th, 2014 at 2:00 PM at the Reed-Culver Chapel with Rev. J.E. Cook of Northside Baptist Church officiating. Visitation will be held the day of the service from 8:00 AM until 2:00 PM. Interment will be held at the Tahlequah City Cemetery.

Honorary Pallbearers for Merl include Glen Moore, Johnny Akins, Chris Moore, Joel Akins, Daniel Davis, Curtis Powers, Bruce Powers, Keith Steincamp, and Thomas Mooney.

Merl Glen Powers was born on December 20th, 1924 in Keota, Oklahoma to Ivris B. and Agnes Ellen Shaw- Powers of Brooken, Oklahoma. Merl graduated from Quinton High School and enlisted in the US Army after his eighteenth birthday. He entered the Army and was stationed with the 251st Port Company from March of 1943 serving in North Africa and India and was awarded the AP Theater Ribbon, WWII Victory Ribbon, and the Good Conduct Medal. He was honorably discharged in 1946. Merl continued his college education at Northeastern State University in Tahlequah, graduating in 1950. He was called back into service for the Korean War and before leaving in December 1950 he married the love of his life Mary Bernell Norris on December 4, 1950 at the First United Methodist Church in Tahlequah, Oklahoma. Merl spent nine months in Japan and was discharged again in September 1951. Merl returned to Northeastern State University and obtained his Masters Degree in Education.

In 1954, Merl and Mary moved to Pawhuska, Oklahoma where he taught and coached high school and junior high athletics. From 1968 through 1972, they lived in Tulsa, Oklahoma where Merl taught at Edison Jr./Sr. high school. In 1972, they returned to Pawhuska where he taught at the high school and worked the cattle at his ranch. Merl retired from teaching in 1983 yet continued ranching until retiring near family in Bartlesville in 1992. He was a proud member of the American Legion and the China Burma India Theater of War Veterans. He was a Christian by faith and faithful member of the First Baptist Church at Pawhuska serving as deacon. He was a member of the First Baptist church in Bartlesville.

Whenever he had time, Merl enjoyed hunting and fishing. He cherished his family and enjoyed every moment with his grandchildren. Mary passed from this life in 2012, and Merl remained near family until he was called to his Eternal Home on February 23rd, 2014, at the age of 89 years old.

Merl is preceded in death by his parents, his wife Mary, and one brother; Pierson Powers. Those left to cherish Merl's memory include one brother, Curtis Powers of Tulsa, Oklahoma, one sister, Patricia Steincamp of Stillwater, Oklahoma; and two beloved daughters, Sue Moore and husband Glen of Danville, California ; and Ann Akins and husband Johnny of Edmond, Oklahoma.

His legacy lives on in his four grandchildren, Chris Moore , Allison Moore Davis , Joel Akins, and Elizabeth Akins and five great-grandchildren , Zoe Davis , Olivia Davis , Lara Davis ,Chase Moore and Ava Moore as well as a host of friends and loved one
