TAHLEQUAH — Funeral services for Mavurline McChristian will be Friday, Feb. 3, at 2 p.m., at Reed-Culver Funeral Chapel with Pastor Dwaine Denny officiating.

Visitation is Thursday, Feb. 2, from 8 a.m. until 8 p.m., at Reed-Culver Chapel. Interment will take place at Tahlequah City Cemetery. Services have been entrusted to Reed-Culver Funeral Home of Tahlequah.

Mavurline McChristian was born on May 11, 1914, in Red Oak, the daughter of Thomas and Rilla (White) Wooten.

She attended school at Ross School. On Dec. 28, 1936, she married Garland McChristian in Tahlequah. This union was blessed with 62 years of marriage and one son, Garland McChristian Jr.

Mavurline was a dedicated wife, mother and grandmother. She was always working and seldom sat down. She had a green thumb and raised beautiful vegetable gardens, canning all the produce for winter.

She was an extremely good cook and her homemade bread and peach cobbler were the best.

You never went away from her home hungry. She was a seamstress who was talented with clothing and quilts alike. She worked for a period of time in the cafeteria at NSU.

She never met a stranger. Mavurline loved people and could talk to anyone. She was a sports enthusiast, and loved watching baseball, basketball – the Oklahoma City Thunder being her favorite team – and calling the shots on football and the Olympics.

In her youth, Mavurline participated in singing conventions. Her soprano voice was used to sing gospel music and hymns for funerals.

A Christian by faith, Mavurline was called home to her Lord and savior on Tuesday, Jan. 31, 2012, in Tahlequah with her family at her side. She was 97 years old.

Her love for her family and her friendly manner will be missed by all those who knew and loved her.

Mavurline was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Garland in 1999; four brothers, Fred, Tean, Bob and Bud Wooten; and two sisters, Nona Wooten and Bernice Ryals.

Those left to cherish her memory include her loving son, Garland McChristian of Tahlequah; and grandson, Bucky Rodkin of Tahlequah. She also leaves nieces, nephews, cousins and a host of friends and loved ones.
