William Herbert "Bill" Hinds Sr.

TAHLEQUAH -- Services for William Herbert "Bill" Hinds Sr. will be held at 2 p.m., Saturday, May 22, 2010, at the First United Methodist Church in Tahlequah. Interment will follow services at Tahlequah City Cemetery. Services have been entrusted to the care of the Hart Funeral Home of Tahlequah.

William Herbert Hinds Sr. was born near Tahlequah on Jan. 18, 1921, the son of Herbert Iredelle Hinds and Bertha Helen (Holland) Hinds. He graduated from Fort Gibson High School, the Oklahoma Military Academy, and Northeastern State University. He served his country during World War II as a B-29 bombardier with the U.S. Army Air Corps, and then served with the U.S. Army Reserves, including a recall to active duty during the Korean Conflict.

He married Mary Elizabeth Russell in 1944 at the Victorville Army Air Base in California.

Returning to Tahlequah, Bill entered the family business and opened Hinds Department Stores, which became a fixture in downtown Tahlequah for over 60 years.

Widowed in early 1960, Bill married Doris Squyres on New Year's Eve, 1960.

Bill was active and instrumental in his community, and was a member of the Rotary Club, Lions Club, Bedouin Shrine, Tulsa Scottish Rite Temple, American Legion and VFW. He was a 32-Degree Mason with Cherokee Masonic Lodge No. 10. Bill was very active in Boy Scout leadership for many years, earning the coveted Silver Beaver Award. In 2004, he was named a Distinguished NSU Alumni. In his spare time, Bill loved to go golfing. He was a longtime member of the First United Methodist Church.

William H. Hinds Sr. passed away on Tuesday, May 18, 2010, at Go Ye Village. He was 89 years old. He was preceded in death by his parents, and by his first wife, Mary Elizabeth.

Bill is survived by his wife, Doris Hinds, of the home; his five children, William H. Hinds Jr. and wife Sharon of Arlington, Texas, James I. Hinds of Tahlequah, Laura Diane Hinds of Tulsa, Jack Russell Hinds and wife, Leeanna, of Fayetteville, Ark., and Stephen G. Hinds of Moore; his sister, Geraldine McCloud of Tulsa; 10 grandchildren, five great-grandchildren; as well as many other friends, family members, and loved ones.
