Jesse Leroy Hemphill was born on Aug. 18, 1920, in Enid. He is the son of Burt and Lilly (Stout) Hemphill. He attended school, then met and married his first wife, Betty Robards. He would later marry Jossie Lee Clinton on July 10, 1961, in Cherokee County. He was a father to four daughters and five sons. Jesse was a custodian at the Tahlequah Public Schools, devoting over 20 years at Greenwood Elementary, and the children entrusted to his care. When he wasn't working, Jesse loved boxing, basketball and football. He was a gifted gardener and planted large gardens, sharing his produce with his family and his friends. He also liked time spent with his livestock.

The most important thing to Jesse was his wife, children and grandchildren. He was a Pentecostal by faith. He had a warm smile and a helping hand for anyone who crossed his path.

The Lord called Jesse to his eternal rest on Wednesday, July 27, 2011, in Sand Springs. He was 90 years old. His friendly way of making people feel at ease will be greatly missed by his many friends and family.

Jesse is preceded in death by his mother and father; first wife, Betty, and second wife, Jossie; two sons, Gary Hemphill and Fred Burwell; one daughter, Thelma Ledbetter; three brothers, Eugene, Herbert and Milford; and one sister, Juanita, along with beloved grandsons.

Jesse will be fondly remembered by his children, Peggy Wilson of Nowata, Charles Hemphill of Nowata, Billy Hemphill of Claremore, Robert Hemphill of Claremore, Joyce Reana Walker of Coffeyville, Kan., Mary Ann Denny of Cave Springs, Ark., Dean Burwell of Catoosa, and Roy Lee Hemphill of Sand Springs.
