Wilma Edith Carpenter was born on April 28, 1919, in Aurora, Mo., the daughter of William and Edith (Phillips) Hunter.
She attended high school in Webb City, Mo., and later, NSU in Tahlequah, obtaining her master's degree in education and art. She married the love of her life, Raymond Carpenter, on Oct. 25, 1942, at the First Christian Church in Ada. This union was blessed with two children, Rebecca and Donald, and 40 years of happiness.
Wilma taught art at NSU and worked in the registrar's office. She loved her students and teaching them to express themselves through their artistic endeavors. Wilma was active in life. She was a member of Tri-Sigma Soroity, PEO, American Association of University Women, Scissortail Painters Club, Chamber of Commerce and sold real estate through Wright Real Estate in Tahlequah. There was always a weekly Bridge Party, square dancing and ballroom dancing on the weekends. Wil-ma was a hostess at heart and went out of her way to make those in her company feel welcome. She set the places at the table with love and care on Sunday, treating anyone at the table to her Sunday pot roast, turkey tetrazzini, and her famous German chocolate cake. The holidays always found her making her famous fudge, check party mix and homemade cookies for her children, grandchildren and friends to enjoy. She loved to travel and enjoyed visits to Germany, Jamaica and her personal favorite, Asia.
She had a keen mind and a clever wit, which made a political or socially based discussion with Wilma anything but dull! She raised roses and African violets for her family and others to enjoy.
The most important aspect of Wilma's life was her husband, children and grandchildren. She adored them. She was so proud of their endeavors and accomplishments. A Christian by faith, Wilma was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Tahlequah and a life member of the Presbyterian Women's Guild.
On Dec. 17, 2012, the Lord called Wilma home from her many tasks, for a well deserved rest. She was 93 years old. She is already missed for the sparkle she brought to life and the love she shared with her family and friends.
Wilma is preceded in death by her parents; husband, Raymond in 1972; four brothers, Gerald, Cecil, Robert and Wendell; and two sisters, Marvel and Mildred.
Those left to cherish her memory include her loving children, Rebecca Coleman and husband Richard of Royse City, Texas, and her son, Donald Carpenter and wife Gina of Plano, Texas. Her sister is Kathryn McCluskey of Corvallis, Ore. Her legacy lives on in her five grandchildren, Kimberly Salgato and husband George of Lancaster, Pa., Melissa Winford and husband Garlan of Marion, Iowa, Laura Boren and husband Shane of Tahlequah, Jennifer Browning and husband Matthew of Keller, Texas, and Michael Carpenter and wife Katy of Temple, Texas. Her great-grandchildren include: Lydia, Logan, Nicholas, Jessica, Chandler, Parker, Cooper, Hunter Elizabeth, Landon and Ava; as well as many nieces, nephews, cousins and a host of friends and loved ones.
