TAHLEQUAH — TAHLEQUAH – Services for Betty Bowen, 79, formerly of Tahlequah, were held Friday, Nov. 25, 2011, in the Tahlequah City Cemetery, with Rev. John Lee of Park Hill Baptist Church officiating.

Interment followed under the care of Green Country Funeral Home. On-line condolences may be made at tahlequahfuneral.com

Betty was born July 22, 1932, the daughter of Clifton H. And Oleta (Ray) Rozell. She departed this life on Nov. 22, 2011, from Jefferson City, Mo.

She had married and survived two husbands, John C. Bowen and Cecil B. Lewis.

Attending Northeastern State University, Betty earned her bachelor of science degree in education. She also attended Drury College for additional instruction. While at NSU, she was a violinist in the University Orchestra. She was the first female concert mistress in the history of Northeastern State University.

Betty worked as a functional unit manager for the Missouri Department of Corrections, retiring in May 1997. Previously, she had worked at Fordland Honor Camp and Renz Correctional Center.

Betty has also worked in Oklahoma, Missouri, and Kansas as an educator in one of the last one-room school houses before state consolidation of all one-room schools. She had also been employed as a councilor.

She enjoyed reading, watching movies, playing the violin, listening to classical music, shopping, cooking, enjoying her pets, and being with family. She was a member of the Eastern Star, the Missouri Corrections Association, a member of the Baptist church, and the wife of a Baptist minister.

She has been preceded in death by two husbands, and sisters Juanita (Rozell) Dorsett, and Sharon Rozell.

She is survived by children, Sharon R. Coldwell and husband Bobby of Tahlequah,  John W. Bowen and wife Mary of Holts Summitt, Mo., and Clifton S. Bowen and wife Debbie also of Holts Summit, Mo.; sister Jeanetta (Rozell) Arnett and her husband Paul, and sister Bobby (Rozell) Covey; five grandchildren, four great-grand children, one great great-grandchild; and a host of other relatives, friends, and loved ones.
