TAHLEQUAH — Thelma Corine (Cogburn) Myres joined her Lord and savior in the early morning hours of Wednesday, Dec. 7, 2011, with her family by her side.
Thelma was born Aug. 10, 1939, the eldest of five children born to Orbray and Helen Cogburn. In 1959, Thelma met her soul mate, James Willard Myres, and after a three-week courtship they were married, and remained devoted to each other, heart and soul, for the next 52 years.
In 1969, they were blessed with the greatest joy of their lives, their only child, son Jay. Thelma could not have loved him more or been more proud of him. To her, he was perfect.
Thelma was gifted in the art of quilting, and made them the way she said they were supposed to be, by hand. She often said the only machine that touched her quilts were an iron and washer. Just looking at one of her creations brings a feeling of love, peace and joy to a person, because those are the emotions that she sewed into them.
Quilting this way is very laborious, but mom didn't see it that way. You could see the way just talking about them and showing what she had finished, or was working on, lit her face with a smile of pure happiness.
Those proceeding her to meet the Lord are her parents, Orbray and Helen Cogburn; and Jim Spears, whom she loved like a son.
Left to cherish her memory are her husband, James; son Jay Myres (Traci); granddaughters, Kaitlin and Jalynn Myres; brothers, Bob (Velta) Cogburn, Norman (Linda) Cogburn and David Copeland; sisters, Freida (Dan) Burgess, Evelyn (Randy) Megah; and many more nieces, nephews, family and friends.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m., Friday, Dec. 9, at Hart Funeral Home. Interment will follow in the Shirley Cemetery under the direction of Hart Funeral Home.
