Brenda Sue Swepston, of Cookson, was born Sunday, Feb. 27, 1944 in Tahlequah to Donald Leroy and Ruby Pauline Young Ballard and died Monday, Feb. 15, 2010 in Cookson at the age of 65 years, 11 months and 18 days.

Brenda was a lifelong resident of the Cookson area and graduated from Beauty School in 1967, she worked for the Cherokee Nation and W. W. Hastings Hospital as a CHR.

She was a paramedic and was an EMS instructor and was instrumental in facilitating the First Responders in the Cookson area. She and her husband, Kenneth, owned and operated the Cookson Game Club for over 30 years.

The family would like to acknowledge the care given to Brenda, during her illness, to her son-in-law, Donny O'Neal.

She is preceded in death by her parents; step-father, Ernest Killer; husband, Kenneth Swepston Sr.; an infant son, Kendal Lee Swepston; daughter, Leticia Swepston; sister, Shirley Lavonne Baskin; grandchildren, Mary Stanley and Jeremy Swepston.

She is survived by her sons, Kenneth Swepston Jr. of Tahlequah, Kevin Lee Swepston and his wife Diane of Cookson, Jonathan Blake Swepston and his fiancé Alicia White of Park Hill; daughters, Donna Hamby and Donny O'Neal of Cookson, Jackie Swepston of Tahlequah; brothers, Simon Leroy Ballard of Arkansas City, Kan., Charles Douglas Ballard and his wife Kathy of Tulsa, James Richard Ballard and his wife Julie of Tahlequah; sisters, Bernice Ann Cookson and her husband David of Welling, Sandra Kay Wyers of Tahlequah; step-sister, Alice Mayes of Stilwell; grandchildren, Carrie Hamby, Sara Hamby, Brittney Swepston, Courtney Swepston, Andrew Swepston; great-grandchildren, Dylan Battermore, Starr Wings and numerous step-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 20, 2010 at the Reed-Culver Funeral Home Chapel with Jerry Swepston officiating. Burial will follow in the Park Hill Cemetery with Tim Davis, Charles Ballard, Carl Baskin, Andy Hathcoat, Damian Cookson and Uriah Cookson serving as pallbearers.

Visitation will be Friday from 1 p.m. until 8 p.m. at the Reed-Culver Funeral Home.
