Howard "Wayne" Frisby

Howard “Wayne” Frisby was born July, 27, 1933, in Okmulgee, to Elmer and Beulah Frisby, who were residents of Tahlequah until their deaths. Wayne had 12 siblings and is survived by siblings Edith Cochran of Broken Arrow and Glennis Bennight of Shawnee.

Wayne married his partner for life, Joan Winn, on Oct. 28, 1955, in Tahlequah. They had three children, Joe Wayne and Donna Frisby of Vinita, Dawn and Randy Myers of Duncan, and Sean Frisby of Muskogee; seven grandchildren, Christopher Wayne and Cassidy Myers of Velma, Nicki and Josh Mares of Duncan, Sammi Jo Frisby of Vinita, Richard and Syreena Frisby of Oceanside, Calif., and Kali, Mason and Katylynn Frisby of Siloam Springs, Ark.; three great-grandchildren, Coda Wayne and Coy Wayne Myers of Velma, and Phoenix Cole Mares of Duncan. Wayne also leaves behind many, many nieces and nephews.

Wayne joined the Army in 1953 and was stationed in Germany. When he was discharged from the service he returned to Tahlequah, attended Northeastern State University, and received a bachelor of arts degree in accounting and business law.

Upon graduation, he moved the family to Duncan. He worked at General Oil Tool for four years before returning to Tahlequah to teach accounting and business law while working on his master's and doctoral degrees. At the same time, he built and operated the Tahlequah skating rink, which he later sold.

After leaving NSU, Wayne became financial director of the Cherokee Housing Authority while building a greenhouse operation starting with one greenhouse. He closed Frisby's Greenhouses in 1997.

Wayne was a proud member and longtime treasurer of the Tahlequah Elks Lodge, and a proud member of the Tahlequah Masonic Lodge where he was also treasurer for many years. He was a card-carrying member of the ROMEO Club of Tahlequah, which stands for “Really Old Men Eating Out,” which they did each and every month.

Wayne and Joan would have celebrated their 57th wedding anniversary next month.

Wayne was a loyal friend to many, and a trusted part of the community, but most importantly, for those who love him, he will be missed more than words can say.

Services will be held at 10 a.m., Tuesday, Sept. 18, 2012, in the Hart Funeral Home Chapel in Tahlequah. Interment will follow in the Okmulgee City Cemetery that afternoon. Visitation will be at the Hart Funeral Home from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m., Monday, Sept. 17.
