Locust Grove--Memorial services for John a Chaffin Jr. 73, of Locust Grove, will be held at 6 p.m. Monday, April 1, 2002 at the Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Tahlequah at 104 N College, with Rev. Thea Nietfield officiating,. Services are under the direction of Reed-Culver Funeral Home.
John A Chaffin Jr., was born on July 30, 1928, in Fairmont, W.V. the son of John A and Myrtle (Knight) Chaffin Sr., and he passed from this life on Thursday, March 29, 2002 in Tahlequah.
Mr. Chaffin attended schools in California, Washington, Utah, Nevada, Indiana and Florida. John served in U.S. Navy during the Korean Conflict. Mr. Chaffin was married to Virginia Jones Sept. 1, 1955, in Miami, Fla. He received a bachelor's degree of arts degree in geography from the University of Miami and a masters degree in library science from Florida State University. John taught introductory geography labs at Miami prior to moving to Locust Grove in 1969. John was a reference librarian at NSU in Tahlequah, retiring in 1987.
John was on of the founders and a charter member of the Unitarian Universalist Congergation of Tahlequah. He was also a board member of the Spring Creek Coalition, as well as other environmental issues.
He was preceded in death by his parents and his son, Kenneth Lee Chaffin. Among those he leaves behind are his wife, Virginia, of the home; one son, Tony Chaffin and wife Becky of Salina, Kansas; and grandson Eric Lee Chaffin, of the home.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Tahlequah, or Doctors without Borders, CARE, or any other charity.
