Johnnie Andrew "John" Powell

January 19, 1947 ~ May 24, 2025

Johnnie Andrew Powell, affectionately known to close family as “J.A.” and simply as “John” to many others, was born on January 19, 1947, in Hinton, Oklahoma, to James Lee and Edith Mae (Roberts) Powell. He passed away at his home on Saturday, May 24, 2025, at the age of 78.

John grew up in Bristow, Oklahoma, and in 1957, moved to the Hulbert and Lost City area, and there attended Hulbert High School. He continued his education at a local Vo-Tech, where he studied welding - a skill he would carry with him throughout life.

On February 17, 1996, John married the love of his life, Linda, at Clear Creek Free Will Baptist Church in Hulbert, Oklahoma. After 11 years in Buena Vista, Colorado, he and Linda relocated to Oklahoma, and together, they built a life in Hulbert, cherishing nearly 30 years of marriage and hoping to reach that special milestone.

John proudly served his country in the United States Army, stationed in Thailand during the Vietnam War. A hardworking man from a young age, he began roofing houses at just 16. He had an incredible talent for fixing things and even crafted custom tools when the job required it. Over the years, John wore many hats—he remodeled homes in Colorado, worked as a plumber, and was employed on the assembly line at American Motors while living in Wisconsin.

A man of faith, John was a member of Prairie View Pentecostal Holiness Church, where he once served as a Sunday School teacher and was known as an elder in the congregation. He loved reading his Bible and was proud to have earned a certificate for reading it through in its entirety.

John was a man of many interests. He and Linda enjoyed tending to their vegetable garden. They grew a variety of fruits and vegetables. He was especially fond of cantaloupe and watermelon. He enjoyed working on creative projects with horseshoes and loved playing games such as Mexican Train, dominoes, card games, and various computer games like Hearts and Words with Friends. An outdoorsman at heart, he hunted elk and mule deer in Colorado and white-tail deer in Oklahoma. But his greatest passion was fishing. He loved being out on the water with friends, fishing year-round, then cleaning and cooking the day’s catch.

Known for his playful spirit, John loved to tease—often using his cane to playfully grab at people—and he never missed a chance to offer a hug. Loyal, loving, and devoted to those he held dear, his absence will be deeply felt by all who knew and loved him. His hugs, in particular, will be missed most of all.

John is survived by: His loving wife: Linda of the home; 7 Children: Sherry Navorski and husband Mark of Lawton, Oklahoma, Johnny Wayne Powell and wife Eleanor of Amherst Junction, Wisconsin, James “Jim” Powell and wife Stephanie of Kent, Washington, Douglas “Doug” Powell and wife Tina of Burlington, Wisconsin, Michelle Wilder and husband Douglas of Broomfield, Colorado, Rodney Powell of Puyallup, Washington, Melissa Hardesty and husband Eric of Silver Lake, Wisconsin; 1 step-son: Carl Points and wife Lorie of Lawton, Oklahoma; Numerous grandchildren and great grandchildren; 5 Siblings: Allen Powell of Bonham, Texas, Carl Powell and wife Judy of Muskogee, Oklahoma, Pam Chapps and husband Frank of Dewar, Oklahoma, Lyndell Powell and wife Sylvia of Kirkland, New Mexico, Lrinda Petersen and husband Chris of Hulbert, Oklahoma; Close fishing buddies: Paul Mullins, Jerry Caudle, Lynn Fry, and Jeff Enkey; Numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives, church family and a host of friends.

John is preceded in death by: parents; 1 baby boy sibling: William Lee Grant Powell; 3 Brothers: Ronnie Powell, Larry Powell, James Powell, Jr.; 2 Sister: Wanda “Lucille” Goff, and Priscilla Estep; and 1 Great-Grandson: Walker Delray Compton.

Funeral services will be held 10:00 A.M., Thursday, May 29, 2025, at the Prairie View Pentecostal Holiness Church in Hulbert, Oklahoma. Brother Philip Morris will officiate. Interment will follow at the New Home Cemetery in Peggs, Oklahoma. Services have been entrusted to the Locust Grove Funeral Home.
