James N. (Jim) Rhodes entered Heaven on Friday, November 29, 2013 while at his home in Wagoner, OK, with his wife and family at his bedside. He was the oldest of three sons born to Henry and Etta Rhodes on April 15, 1927. He was 86 years, 7 months and 15 days old.
Jim and Pearline (Thornburg) were united in marriage January 4 1949 and were married 64 years, 10 months and 25 days. From this union seven children were born. They lived many years in the Hulbert area before moving to Wagoner.
Jim served in the U.S. Navy during WWII. He was a carpenter and a lifetime member of the Carpenters Union. His skills as a carpenter were seen in the many wood projects he created in his workshop for family and friends. He loved growing gardens and had a passion for horses. His gift in life was helping others, and he was known for his laughter and joking. He attended First Assembly of God Church in Wagoner and was a member of the Oddfellows Lodge and the American Legion.
Left to cherish Jim's memories and carry on his legacy are his wife, Pearline, of the home; his children, Frank and Gail Rhodes of Catoosa, Kathy and Tony Owens of Wagoner, Travis and Sandra Rhodes of Hulbert, Duard and Joni Rhodes of Wagoner, Eugene and Angie Rhodes of Council, Hill, and Gloria and Curtis Shankle of Tahlequah; 14 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; 1 great-great-grandchild; and 8 step-grandchildren.
Jim was preceded in death by his parents, Henry and Etta Rhodes; two brothers, Kermit and Lloyd Rhodes; one daughter, Janie Rhodes and one great-grandson, David Elliott.
The family will be present at a visitation Monday from 5-7 p.m. at Mallett Funeral Home in Wagoner. The funeral service will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday, December 3, 2013 at the Assembly of God Church in Wagoner. Officiates will be the Reverend Carl Murphy and the Reverend Tim Boyett. Interment will be in I.O.O.F. Cemetery in Hulbert, OK.
Pallbearers are his grandsons: James Ballard, Jeramy Rhodes, Gabe Rhodes, Brad Shankle, Chase Shankle, and Justin Rhodes. Honorary pallbearers are his granddaughters: Gwen Elliott, Valerie Felps, Bobbie Ivey, Jennifer Pate, Rachel Simpson, Amanda Berg, Chelise Slader and Tamara Rhodes.
