Lucy Christie

 Lucy Christie was born November 20, 1925 and at age 89 years of age she left this earthly side to be with her Savior on June 21, 2015 surrounded by family.

 

Lucy was the daughter of Lacy and Charlotte (Flute) Christie. Lucy fondly loved to talk about her Aunt Susie Campbell and Grandfather John Campbell, as they helped raise Lucy after her parents died at an early age.

 

Lucy grew up in the Barber Community and attended Etta Bend Country School, Hungry Mountain School and Sequoyah Orphans Training School where she graduated from high school. Lucy made her profession of faith at an early age when Sequoyah Orphans Training School would bus students to Tahlequah First Baptist Church and her membership has remained there over the years.

 

Knowing at an early age the hardship and loneliness of growing up without parents, she devoted her life to being a dorm matron at Seneca Indian School in Wyandotte, OK and from there went to Carter Seminary in Ardmore, OK. Many young girls that were under her care have sought to return to Lucy and thank her for her kindness and guidance.

 

Lucy loved to share stories about growing up and enjoyed discussing politics. Lucy was knowledgeable about the facts of bureaucracy and would not hesitate to share her perception.

 

Lucy will be remembered by her many close cousins, family and friends as a woman who loved animals. Her kind heart could not turn away any stray. It was not surprising to hear that another stray kitty or puppy found their way to her home, she would patiently offer feed and water until her nurturing brought the animal back to health. Lucy gave all her love to her many animals and they were a part of her family as she was truly a Godsend to many of her cats and dogs. Even after moving into the Cherokee County Nursing Home due to failing health, she never failed to ask those visiting how her cats were doing; she would name each one and ask if they were being fed plenty.

 

Lucy's legacy will be remembered by her friends and family, she was adored as a strong Cherokee Lady. She was independent, dedicated to her faith, humorous and witty. She was a treasured lady an inspiration as she showed love for all living things especially her way of cherishing her animals.

 

Lucy will be missed by her family and friends.

 

Lucy was preceded in death by her parents, one sister, Ida Christie, her brother, Richard Christie.

 

Those left to cherish her memory are her adopted brothers, Wesley Campbell, Charles Campbell, John Campbell and Darrel Campbell and wife Nancy all of Welling, OK, adopted sisters; Ollie Thornton and husband Jerry of Wichita, KS, Letha Marris and husband Roy of Ardmore, OK, cousins; Emma Thirsty, Patricia Cameron, Fred Cameron, and Isaac Christie and wife Bobbi. She is also survived by one special cousin, Mary Campbell, whom became Lucy's caregiver in 1997 and was by her side until her passing .The love provided to her  by Mary was a blessing that allowed Lucy to remain in her home for many years, enjoying a life she enjoyed. Lucy's faith, positive attitude and compassion for all will be remembered by all who knew Lucy.

 

Funeral services were held 2:00 p.m. Wednesday, June 24, 2015, at Hart Memorial Chapel with Bro. Charles Duvall officiating. Interment followed at Barber Cemetery under the care and direction of Hart Funeral Home of Stilwell.
