Murray Marvin Liddell

He graduated from Chilocco Indian School in 1936. While in high school
and college he was the Kansas City Golden Glove Champion in 1934 and
1935-36 and Oklahoma Welterweight Champion in 1937-38. Mr. Liddell was
also New York Intercity Champion and International Champion in
Welterweight in 1938. In 1934 He was Oklahoma State and Missouri Valley
Champion. He was inducted into the Oklahoma Athletic Hall of Fame as one
of Oklahoma's all time greats in boxing. Mr. Liddell attended Murray
State College and Oklahoma State University.
He served in the Army during World War II. He and Doris Pruitt were
married September 16, 1944, at Fort Smith, Arkansas. She preceded him in
death July 12, 1999.
After the war he completed college and received his law degree from the
Oklahoma City University Law School. Mr. Liddell was the first attorney
for the Legal Aid Program in the State of Oklahoma, serving three
counties in eastern Oklahoma. He also served as the attorney for
Oklahomans for Indian Opportunity and the Chickasaw Housing Authority.
Mr. Liddell was a member of the Chickasaw Tribal Council and the
Inter-tribal Council of the Five Civilized Tribes from 1963 to 1974.
Mr. Liddell served as County Attorney in Love County and Delaware County
and as an attorney for the Oklahoma ABC Board. Before his retirement he
was in private law practice in Ardmore. He was a member of St. Mary's
Catholic Church in Ardmore.
Survivors include one daughter, Sue Estes of Ardmore; one son, Mark
Liddell of Dallas; four sisters, Betty Galloway and Emma Dean, both of
Marietta, Jane Pipin of Arizona and Jean Cochran of Houston, Texas; two
brothers, Iverson Liddell of Gladewater, Texas and Billy Liddell of
Marietta; two grandchildren and one great-granddaughter.
He was also preceded in death by a daughter, Kay Doris Thompson; three
brothers and one sister.
Serving as pallbearers will be members of the Carter County Bar Association.
