Services for Berneda “Bonnie” C. Smith, 93, of Marietta,
were held at 10 a.m. Wednesday, December 28, in the Flanagan-Watts Funeral Home
Chapel, with the Rev. Ronnie Harris officiating. Entombment was in Hillcrest
Memorial Park Mausoleum, Ardmore. Arrangements were directed by Flanagan-Watts
Funeral Home, Marietta.
Born October 24, 1912at Leon, the daughter of Robert E.
And Jackie Lee Tapp Cartwright, she died Sunday,
December 25, 2005 at her residence.
A resident of Marietta since 1981, Mrs. Smith was a
graduate of Thackerville High School in 1931and a 1936
graduate of the John Peter Smith Hospital Nursing School
in Fort Worth. She received her public nursing
certificate in 1938. She was a stewardess with American
Airlines from 1939 to 1941and joined the Army Medical
Corps, where she served from 1941 to 1945. Mrs. Smith
worked for the Dallas Independent School System as a
nurse for 25 years, retiring in 1981. During that time,
she received her Master’s degree in Health Education
from the Texas Woman’s University. Mrs. Smith worked for
the Love County Health Department from 1986 to 1988. She
devoted a total of 54 years to the nursing profession.
She was a member of the First Christian Church of
Marietta.
Survivors include three nephews and wives, Bobby
Thornhill of Spokane, Washington, J. H. And Myrna Hayes
and Jack and Pam Hayes, all of Marietta, one niece,
Melva Dean Graves, Fayetteville, Arkansas, and special
friends, Valine Stonebarger and Lois Steudemanboth of
Marietta.
She was preceded in death by her parents and three
sisters.
Pallbearers were John Kennedy, Jack Hayes, J. H. Hayes,
Ronnie Westfall, Tom Hayes and Wayne Brown. Honorary
pallbearers were Dr. J. T. O’Connor, Jr. And employees
of the Love County Health Department.
