Herman L. Hendrickson, Jr., born September 3,
1928, in Seminole, OK to Herman L. and Florence L. (Armitage)
Hendrickson, Sr., went to be with the Lord on February 20, 2015. Herman
was the second of four children. He graduated from Capitol Hill High
School in 1946 and then served as Mailman on the U.S.S. McDermut in the
United States Navy during the Korean War. Herman continued as Mailman
for the US Postal Service after being discharged from the Navy. Herman
married Shirley Ann Zoubek of Union City, OK on April 23, 1955 and,
together, they raised a daughter, Sheryl Ann Hendrickson and a son, Dahl
Wayne Hendrickson.
Herman raised his family on the Zoubek farm in Union City, Oklahoma. The
family lived on the farm for 33 years before moving to Oklahoma City in
2004 to be close to Bethany First Church of the Nazarene. Herman was
always active in the church and his Sunday School class. He took
pleasure in serving his church family, whether at home or at the cabin.
Cooking out hamburgers was his speciality. He enjoyed many projects,
including raising Brittney Spaniels, building a carport, building a
cabin at Lake Tenkiller, and rebuilding and refurbishing a 1948
Studebaker pickup, painting it OSU orange. Herman was an avid bird
watcher, his favorite being the Purple Martin. There are many stories
about the Purple Martin House. He also enjoyed hunting quail and playing
golf.
Herman was President of the U.S. Employees Federal Credit Union and was
also instrumental in locating and securing land for a new building for
the Credit Union. After retiring, Herman’s dream was always to travel.
He and Shirley traveled to all fifty states in the United States and all
provinces in Canada, with greatest memories from the trip to Alaska!
Herman was a huge sports fan of Oklahoma State University’s football and
basketball teams.
