Funeral for Mary “Fuzzy” Shull Thompson will be 11 am. Saturday, Oct. 1, 2011, at St. John’s Lutheran Church, Okarche.
Mary passed away Tuesday, Sept. 27, 2011, at her home in Okarche, Okla.
She was born Oct. 24, 1917, to Atwell
Converse Shull and Annie Firestone Shull in Roanoke, Va.
She was
preceded in death by her parents; brother, Atwell C. Shull II;
and husband, retired USAF Lt. Col. Earl L. “Tommy” Thompson.
She is survived by her daughters, retired USAF Major Kathryn
Tahiri of Piedmont, Okla., and Sharon Thompson of Okarche,
Okla.; and her granddaughter, Khamsin Tahiri, of Chicago, Ill.
She also is survived by several generations of family members in Oklahoma, Texas, Arkansas, California, Virginia, North Carolina and Georgia. Mary, a former WAAC, WAC and USAF Major, was a pioneer in every sense of the word.
Her nearly 11 years of military service took her places few other women had gone at the time, as she was stationed at several locations in Europe during World War II and the postwar period, when America helped the battered continent rebuild. Later, while stationed in Newfoundland, Mary was invited to a bridge game by Tommy Thompson, the man she would eventually marry in 1951. Following a transfer to Washington D.C., Mary served as adjutant to the United States Air Force Band’s commander and symphonic conductor, Colonel George S. Howard. Mary was honorably discharged in January 1953, shortly before the birth of her first child, Kathryn.
