© Steverson Funeral Home Anadarko, Oklahoma Tuesday, August 25, 2009 Virgil Hume Swift Jr 1947 ~ 2009 ANADARKO - Funeral for Virgil Hume Swift Jr, 62, Anadarko, will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at First United Methodist Church. Mr. Swift died Tuesday, Aug. 25, 2009, in Oklahoma City. Burial will be in Wichita Tribal Cemetery, northeast of Anadarko, under direction of Steverson Funeral Home, Anadarko. He was born April 13, 1947, in Lawton, and graduated from Anadarko High School with the Class of 1965. He was a lifetime resident of Anadarko. He attended Cameron State Agricultural College for two semesters, participating in the ROTC program. He enlisted in the Army and served one year as a medic in Vietnam. Following his discharge, he enrolled at USAO in Chickasha, and was 8 hours short of getting his degree in biology. He worked at Grady Memorial Hospital while there and worked closely with the medical examiner. He then went into the brick masonery and construction business and owned Point One Construction Company for several years. He built Tawakoni Plaza on East Colorado, which he later sold to the Apache Tribe. He married Lois Annette Haumpy on Feb. 19, 1982, in Wichita Falls, Texas. He was a member of Indian Spring Indian Baptist Church. He was a member of the Wichita Tribe, where he served as an officer on the executive committee. He also was the historical preservation representative for the Wichita Tribe, and served as chairman of the Wichita Housing Authority. He was the Native American Graves Protection and Repatriation Act representative for the Wichita Tribe. He was instrumental in the development of the Wichita and Affiliated Tribes Cultural Center in Anadarko. He also served as commander of the Southwest Oklahoma Vietnam Veteran's Association. Survivors include his wife, of the home; two sons and daughters-in-law: Ryan Jon Swift Sr. and Melissa Dawn, Anadarko; and Frank Carl Swift and Angela, Lawton; two daughters and a son-in-law: Daisy Mae Swift and Renee and Kevin Hill, all of Anadarko; a goddaughter, Addison Cloud, Thomas; two adopted daughters: Krystal Onco Mendinghall and Doni Onco Bertsch, both of Duncan; grandchildren: Ryan Jon Swift Jr., Anadarko; Keilee Jay Swift, Fort Cobb; Kayla Swift and Corbyn James Swift and Avoniqa Smith, all of Lawton; Cameron Hill and Alex Hill, both of Anadarko; Sonny Telles, Jesse James Mendinghall and Bricen Lane Mendinghall, all of Duncan; three brothers: Jimmy Reeder and Roger Reeder, both of Anadarko; and James Reeder, Logan, Utah; four sisters: Carol Yater, Ohio; Jennie Fowler, Oklahoma City; Lucinda Domebo and Benetta Reeder, both of Anadarko; adopted dad, J.T. Goombi, Washita; adopted sisters: Martha Perez, Carnegie; and Roberta Whiteshield, Lawton; close friends and adopted brothers:Tim Baugh, Richard "Red" Quoetone, Eddie Mahseet, Charles Carter, Hicks Boyiddle, Pete Peterson and George Moran; many nieces and nephews, cousins and other relatives; and many friends and members of other tribes. He was preceded in death by his mother, LaVera Mae Swift Reeder; grandparents, Frank and Emma Campbell Swift; an infant son, Virgil H. Swift Jr.; a brother, Charles "Buster" Reeder Jr.; a sister, Kathleen Reeder; and four adopted brothers: Houston "Sonny" Klinekole Jr., Albert Littleman, Kenneth Carter and Wesley Sage.
