Clarence B. Sullivan MD
February 3, 1897 ~ February 17, 1977

C.B. Sullivan Service Held At Colony

Funeral services for Dr. C.B. Sullivan, Sr., 80, Carnegie resident since 1938, were last Sunday in the Presbyterian church at Colony. Burial was in the Poage cemetery, near Colony.

Dr. Sulivan died February 17, while having lunch with his son, Dr. Bennet Sullivan in Tulsa.

Born February 3, 1897, he married the former Esther Grace Bayles in June, 1924. He came to Carnegie in 1938 after practicing in Colony and Cordell.

He was the first son of Jasper Daniel and Emma Mae Sullivan and was born in Moore, Oklahoma at the home of his maternal grandmother, Amanda Watt.

Both families came to the territory when it was opened for settlement in 1889.

His father was a blacksmith and the growing family lived in Davis and Tishomingo before the loss of his father in a hunting accident on Christmas Day 1901.

The young widow settled in Mishak where the children, Ruby, and Clarence started school. When he was about twelve he was baptized into the Christian church by immersion in a farm pond. The family moved with a new stepfather, John Jeter Page, and his two children, Clyde and Gladys, to a farm between Colony and Eakly. Another son, Gene, was born there.

Clarence finished high school at Geary and worked his way through two years of college at Cameron, graduating in 1917. He progressed to the University of Oklahoma and graduated in 1920. He interned in Kansas City and Houston and worked with the dermatologist, Lain and Roland in Oklahoma City.

On June 22, 1924 his marriage to Esther Grace Bayles, the first dietician at University Hospital, took place in the home of friends on 13th Street in Oklahoma City. The young couple left by train for Houston and later moved to a logging town in Louisiana. The first son, C.B., Jr. was born there.

Dr. Sullivan entered the Indian Service and Moved to Colony to practice in 1926. The next two children, Robert Raymond and Mary Ellen, were born there.

In the summer of 1938 the family moved to Carnegie where Dr. Sullivan entered a partnership with Dr. Fred L. Patterson and together they owned and operated the Carnegie Hospital until Dr. Sullivan became sole owner.

As a physician he had the rare privilege of caring for Dr. Magness in his final illness for Dr. Dr. Magness had assisted at the birth of C.B., Sr. so many years before.

Dr. Sullivan was a charter member of the Carnegie Rotary club.

His work, family, church responsibilities and friends filled the remainder of his life. He found time to sing with a barbershop quartet, paint, play golf, enjoy sports events; but most of all, he enjoyed and cared for people.

Dr. Sullivan retired from active practice in December 1974 and then spent time with family and friends. He wrote an account of his life which will be ready soon. One of his last creative efforts was a poem, "Ode to Turkey Mountain," which he was still in the process of refining as he visited with his older son, Ben, in Tulsa. He had a fine view of Turkey Mountain from Ben's back yard, and he loved to watch the changing beauty of the seasons there.

He is survived by his widow of the home; two sons, Dr. C.B. Sullivan, Jr. of Tulsa and Dr. Robert Sullivan of Norman; two daughters, Mrs. Leroy Page of Manhattan, Kan., and Mrs. Leon [Pat] King of Hydro; one half-brother, Gene Page of Weatherford, and 15 grandchildren.

The grandchildren are: Charles Bennette Sullivan, Randall Lynn Sullivan, Paul Stuart Sullivan of Tulsa; Robert Raymond Sullivan Jr., Brent J. Sullivan, Martha Ann Sullivan, Daniel Scott Sullivan of Norman; Elizabeth Anne Page, Mary Susan Page, Margaret Ellen Page, Rebecca Leigh Page, Steven Winston King, Marsha King, Lori King and Michael King of Hydro.
