Oklahoma City, Oklahoma March 2017 August 7, 1932 ~ March 5, 2017 Eddie Ray Spaulding, age 84, departed this life Sunday, March 5, 2017, at the Integris Hospice House in Oklahoma City, OK. Service for Eddie Ray Spaulding will be at the United Methodist Church in Gracemont, OK at 11:00am, Thursday, March 9, 2017. Burial will follow in the Murray Cemetery, Binger, OK under the direction of Turner Funeral Home. Eddie Ray Spaulding was born August 7, 1932 to Ed and Melba “Smith” Spaulding in Vinita, OK and departed from this life March 5, 2017 in Oklahoma City, OK. Eddie attended elementary school at White Oak and graduated from high school at Centralia, OK in 1949. He loved sports and was on the high school basketball team. Ed also attended Northeastern Oklahoma A&M in Miami for a time. He enlisted in the United States Air Force during the Korean Conflict in October 1951 and served until December 1954 where he was discharged at Eglin Air Force Base, FL. He served in the Air Force Training Command specializing as a Cryptographic Operator and was stationed in Japan. Eddie’s son, Dennis Dale Spaulding, was born 22 October 1951 from his first marriage. After serving four years in the Air Force, he was discharged and later moved to Tulsa, OK and worked for Southwestern Bell Telephone Company for 13 years. He then was employed by Cities Service Company in the Engineering Department, then transferred to the Telecommunications Department. He continued as Telecommunications Manager after Occidental Petroleum Company bought Cities Service Company. His responsibilities required world-wide travel to foreign countries and exotic locations. It was at Cities Service Company that Eddie met Donna Arlene Ulman and they later married in November 1977. They both retired from Occidental Petroleum in 1989 and moved to the family farm located near Gracemont, OK and lived there for 25 years. They spent many happy years there and were active in the Methodist Church, and loved taking ATV 4-wheeler trips with friends. He especially liked riding the Paiute Trail in Utah with a group. Eddie was a 32nd Degree Mason and also a Shriner. He belonged to the Akdar Shrine in Tulsa and participated in many Christmas Parades as a member of the “Outlaws” 3-wheeler group. He later belonged to the Anadarko Masonic Lodge. He loved sports. He enjoyed watching NASCAR racing and basketball, especially the OU basketball teams and the Thunder NBA basketball team. Ed was an avid reader and was especially interested in history and the Civil War and enjoyed visiting many battlefields. As a boy, on Saturday trips to town, Eddie Ray always set out to find his Grandpa Smith who would reward him for the visit with a quarter. This lesson was a fond memory for him and the spark leading to a life of love, support and generosity that characterized Eddie Ray. Eddie was admired and respected by all who knew him and greatly loved by his family including his many nieces, nephews, grandnieces and grandnephews, each of whom were made to feel special by his kindness and love. He also participated in the Caddo Culture Club along with Donna who is a member of the Caddo Nation. He was invited by the leader of the Caddo Culture Club to sit at the drum along with tribal members and was able to learn several of the songs and tribal traditions. The Caddo Culture Club was invited to sing at numerous events and he always enjoyed his time singing with the Club. He was preceded in death by his parents, Ed and Melba “Smith” Spaulding, step-son, James Philip Ulman, Jr.,by four brothers, George, Milan, Ben, and Paul Spaulding, and one sister, Sue “Spaulding” Hart. He is survived by his wife of 40 years, Donna, and son, Dennis; step-daughter, Susan Buck, of Scottsdale, AZ; step-son, Michael Ulman and wife, Lacy, of Waxahachie, TX; and Brian Eaves and his wife Angie of Tulsa, OK; 8-grandchildren, Jessica Buck, Bianca Buck, Justin Buck, Sophia Ulman, Harris Ulman, Mariah Liles, Madison Liles, Marshall Liles; and nieces: Melinda Naderi and husband, Mahmoud of Madison, AL, Teri Hart and partner Dave Depatie of Nashville, TN, Barbara Spaulding, of Midland, TX; Sara Candler and husband, Dennis, of Midland, TX; Penny Phillippi, Susi Tuffs, Jeanne Spaulding, Judy Spaulding, Lenora Myers; and nephews, Marty Hart and wife, Katrina, Dan Spaulding and wife, Debbie, of Owasso, OK, Larry Spaulding, Wayne Spaulding, John Spaulding, Duke Spaulding, Mike Spaulding, Steve Spaulding, Jeff Spaulding.
