© Carnegie Herald Carnegie, Oklahoma Wednesday, May 16, 1919 ~ December 12, 1999 Funeral services were held December 15, 1999 at the Smith Funeral Chapel in Anadarko for Lawrence Snake who died Dec 12, 1999 in Oklahoma City, Ok. Prayer service was held December 14, 1999 in the Smith Funeral Chapel. Burial was in the Memory Lane Cemetery at Anadarko under the direction of the Smith Funeral Chapel of Anadarko. Mr Snake was born May 16, 1919 in Washita, Caddo CO, OK. to Frank and Bessie Snake. He married in 1947 to Dorothy Hilderbrand. He was a member of the first graduating class of Riverside Indian School. He was a Golden Gloves Boxer. He enlisted in the U.S. Army February 17, 1941 and was taken prisoner by the Japanese in February of 1942. He was taken to several Pacific Islands before being taken to Burma where he was forced to build the railroad across Burma jungle. For one and one-half years he was a member of the "Lost Battalion", that got the name because the U.S. Army was unaware of their location. He was a prisoner of war for three and one-half years. He was a member of the Country Estates Baptist Church in Midwest City, Ok. He was a 32 degree Mason and belonged to the Veterans of Foreign Wars, the Disabled American Veterans and the American Ex-Prisoners of War. He was preceded in death by his parents, his stepfather, one brother and three sisters. Survivors include his wife, one daughter, two sons, two grandchildren and four sisters. |
